Hi I have a 1999 525TDs which is extremly hard to start when warm it is ok to start in mornings and when cold but it keeps turning over for a long time before starting when warm and often can run the battery flat. Does anyone know of this problem or know someone I could go to with this problem.

There are a number of things that could cause it.
Fuel supply/filter, Glow plug/control, VE Pump etc.
Best bet is to book it in with someone who will keep it overnight and check it when cold and most likely to play up.

is that the straight-6 ? If so, I know the problem from its Vauxhall Omega application - usually it's something to do with the "leak off" pipes on the injectors - these perish over time and can let fuel evaporate to the air. Not a problem when cold, but definitely a problem when hot. It's a fiddly DIY job to renew those pipes, but do-able.

Other fixes I have read about:

    - renew the fuel filter, or let the water out of it (apparently it filters water out of the fuel ?!)

    - check the ECU's temperature sensors (I don't have any more detail on that, but might make sense to someone else - apparently the ECU sees the engine is hotter than it actually is, so doesn't provide enough fuel to get it started)

hope that helps. I guess if the engine bay smells a bit of diesel, then it's likely to be the leak-off pipes. Renewing the fuel-filter is an easy fix anyway.

Does it cut out when warm? If so then Id definitley suspect the temp sensor going to the ECU.
The cheapest solution may be to go to a BMW specialist such as AC Cars just off Dublins SCR. Where are you?

Hi Thanks for that it does knock off sometimes when warm also some time the pre heat light on dash comes on do you know where that sensor is located as I may chage that first.

Give Al a ring - there is really no point changing various bits and pieces only to find that its something totally different.
