If you play for ireland and declare yourself to be IRISH in my opinion you should be singing A na B as it is irelands NA not that Irelands Call. If you see yourself as been British there are enough teams out there for you to choose to play for.
Censoring Alan Celtic for voicing his opinion is a bit extreme it is a discussion site after all and you need all different types of views to have a decent debate about this topic, What ever happened to freedom of speech. Ive no problem with England playing here as i will enjoy our victory over them oh so much and i will listen quietly to their anthem.
For all you politically correct guys on here and those who would like to sing along with GSTQ(absolute Plonkers) to drown out the few boo Boys, who are great "armchair" rugby fans, i aint a huge rugger fan but i will be pitchside next Saturday enjoying the view while You do gooders sit at home been all Righteous....

He was banned for abuse. You have an issue with that got to feedback. Don't Bring it up here again.

There is no freedom of speech on boards. it is a privately owned website.

Great to see another non rugby fan get a ticket. Especially one who appears to know nothing about the history of irish rugby.

Quoted for truth, if you don't like it don't sing it and keep your trap closed.
Their probaly won't be 1000 people booing the English NA and hopefully a lot less.

I am a real armchair fan, I come from a Soccer background but have watched Rugby for years especially for it's ethos of playing hard and not complaining afterwards about the Ref etc.
My Dad told me tonight that there are plans to have someone from the Irish squad speak to the English players about the History of Croke Park and the G.A.A. etc. He said that it was going to be Shane Horgan that will do it.
Personally, I find this to be quite bizarre, the English lads would surely laugh him out of it as to them surely they will play on whatever pitch we ask them to. They are getting no favours from the G.A.A., in fact they would be aware of it as some sort of patriotic wind up from us to be telling them about their forefathers and their actions in that stadium. I feel that playing Rugby there is really only significant to us Irishmen. From a Psych point of view, they will be aware of it and try to silence the crowd early on. Am I mad or sane on this one?

it's actually Conor O'shea (who played for Ireland 35 times and whose father won all ireland medals with kerry in the 50's)who works for the English Rugby union.

but i do kinda agree with you

It should be Mich Galway - All Ireland Medal and played for Munster, Ireland and Lions. A true legend.

Stupid idea though. To be honest though, no matter what we say to England I just can't see them beating us.

I agree. Thought that doesn't mean the significance of the occasion to the Irish should not be explained to the visitors.

Truest words said on this thread yet.

There was a guy from Republican SF on The Last Word tonight saying they were having a protest to protest about England playing a sports event in Ireland while British troops still occupy part of this 'country'.
Of course he had no real answer when asked what he thought about the fact that memebers of the Irish team identify themselves as 'British'.

One thing is for sure: All players standing for both (well, three really) anthems will stand to attention and show respect to all. This is the complete opposite to players lining up before a hurling or football match. They are jumping and jinking all over the place while the anthem gets sung.
It takes a lot to kick me off about a sport but this particular area bugs the hell outta me when I see it. GAA sports and soccer have more in common than they care to admit.

England were the only team which came over here during the height of the troubles in the mid 70s. Their players, rugby union and even their pundits have sweet f.a. to do with what happened in 1920.
Its their right to sing their anthem before the game. They sing it in Lansdowne road every two years so its about time people thought for themselves and moved on this embarrassing subject.
If any incidents occur next saturday in connection with this "controversy", I shall be truly embarrassed and depressed. A sad regression back to the 70s and 80s is the foremost mindset to be avoided. I'm positive some people thrive on it. They're the problem. Not the bloody RFU in Twickenham.

I lived in Norway for 5 years. The Royal Anthem there is sung to the same tune as Heaven Help Lizzie.

    Here's the lyrics for you:

    Gud sign vår konge god!
Sign ham med kraft og mot
    sign hjem og slott!
Lys for ham ved din Ånd,
    knytt med din sterke hånd
    hellige troskapsbånd
    om folk og drott!

    Høyt sverger Norges mann
hver i sitt kall, sin stand,
    troskap sin drott.
    Trofast i liv og død,
    tapper i krig og nød,
    alltid vårt Norge lød
    Gud og sin drott.

If anyone accosts you, just say "det var vår kongesangen. hav faen er problemet??" :D

Did u notice at the last match against France, none of the Ulster players sang the National Anthem while when it came to the Irelands Call song a good few of the non ulster players didnt sing it - only singing the National Anthem.

I personally dont think the English National Anthem should be booed.

    BUT

I personally didnt want the GAA to open up Croke Park as i found it unique and fascinating that it was only used for Irish Sports(International Rules is a mix i guess.) and i would like to think that it could have been like that for the rest of my life.

But i also understood the argument that it was taxpayers money that paid for Croke Park and thats fair enough,so when they decided to open up Croke Park i wasnt too bothered but just found the idea "romantic" that it would only be used for Irish sports(GAA football and hurling)

On the Anthem thing i DONT think we should play Irelands Call as we should play our National Anthem ONLY both home and away.

If we play Irelands Call to appease the Ulster contingent - tough we shouldnt play it.

If they dont want to sing the national anthem fair enough but we shouldnt give in to them,if they dont want to play for Ireland fine it doesnt bother me.

Anyway its great to see more and more articles appearing about what a good few Ulster supporters are really like(racist and bigots)

Iv seen it at schools rugby, schoolkids with gumshields in different colours some the tri-colour and playing against northern schools and the players on the northern schools abusing the opposition players because of their gumshields, yet one of these Ulster players in particular has gone on to represent Ireland at underage level.

    Rant over

If they were truly bigots/racists they wouldn't play for Ireland.

Rugby union is the one high-profile sport which Ireland as an island plays as one team. Its not quite as simple as singing this or that. I am glad we've got it as we do. The only thing wrong with Ireland's Call is its corniness. Not the idea of the it (in my view, of course).

As for schools rugby union, I played Leinster schools rugby in the 80s. I've been called all sorts of things when representing the school I attended against other Leinster schools. Pretty pathetic and one of the reasons why I say that kind of tunnel-visioned poop is not exclusive to the province of Ulster.

Go on then, tell me which international team could a Northern Ireland rugby player play for, in your opinion, if he identified as British?
He's not English, he's not a Scot and he's not Welsh, so why would those teams want him? How could they claim NI players?

I suppose such a player could change codes to play rugby league and hope to line up for Great Britain, but we're talking about rugby union, so what team could he play for?

First off i referred to Ulster supporters as bigots not players, just i think we dont need to have a song for the Ulster players.

My point was that this Ulster schoolboy player got so wound up over a gumshield in green, white and orange that he started abusing this player yet he goes on to play alongside this player for Ireland at underage level with a green, white and orange flag representing the country they are both playing for.

But im a very strong nationalist and would like a 32 county Ireland blah blah blah and all the rest but there is others out there to who want the same but what annoys me about some of them everything is anti-prod this anti-prod that whereas if they bothered to do a bit of history research they would see that great nationalists like Wolfe Tone,Charles Stewart Parnell,Robert Emmet and even Sam Maguire :) where all protestants.
So i think you need to appreciate that alot of the schoolboys you played against didnt have a clue what they where talking about and you should of told them about some of the great protestants there was.
Im Catholic by the way ;)

you really don't seem to understand that this isn't our team and we aren't doing them a favour by letting them play. This is an Ireland team drawn from two countries. Your arguments are so childish, you like 'prods' as long as they have the same opinion as you and know their place?

Yep in most respects. The team represents the island as a whole. Ireland's Call never mentions the nation once. It emphasises the four provinces of Ireland.
We should be inspired by the South African near-equivalent which comprises of no less than 5 different languages (Xhosa, Zulu, Sesotho, Afrikaans, English). And it is indeed a hair-tingling anthem to witness before a game too. If they can instigate "moving on" then so should we.
