1 hour into 888 $25k guaranteed. 2000 in chips, starting stack, happy enough after some fluctuation without a real hand.

    JJ on button.
    Blinds 50 / 100

UTG +1 (1700 in chips), raises to 300
Hes just moved to the table so I know nada

folded round to guy next to me (3800) he calls
This guys been involved in a good few hands, all or nothing type player, saw him refuse to let go QK on Khigh flop earlier, despite heavy betting.

I flat call (in hindsight a mistake obviously)

    FLOP: 10 8 2 RAINBOW

Raiser leads for 500. Pretty sure he's a pocket pair now.

Other guy thinks for a while then flat calls. This strikes me as very strange as the way he plays if he has any of this he's raising, he's not a passive player.

    I dwell for as long as I can then fold cos;

    1. Theres a chance raiser has a higher pair.
    2. I'm convinced the only reason other guy is flatcalling is he has a lot of this and wants to milk us, a set or 2 pair.
    3. If I raise I'm committed so I may as well be all in and I'm essentially gambling with both of them.

They get it all in on turn,
    Raiser has 99
Flatcaller A10 (top pair top kicker - his dwell was fear of overpair)

I don't get over this opportunity to effectively triple up.

Am I too tight here? Should I just have pushed pre or post flop and take it like a man if I'm a dog or outdrawn?

Yeah but I think its the weak player who can NEVER get off JJ on a 10 high flop, or indeed JJ preflop. Harder on the internet cos you cant look at the guy youre afraid has an overpair / set.

In your average big MTT youre going to see JJ run into QQ KK AA or a set often enough. Real Q is do you just accept this as poker and pay them off each time, or fold the winning hand occasionally to fold the losing hand occasionally.

in the early stages of a big online MTT on this board with JJ its a deffo yes

edit: as i type that I have just shoved JJ on a 10 high, all heart flop with 30 players left in the Tribecca 20k - kinda apt

    Go BigCity

I'd rail you but I'm on dial up and I don't got Trtibeca downloade3d.

I presume she held up then?

Would you not be concentrating on the business end of that tournie rather than browsing boards no?

As BCB says, that is not the phase of an MTT to be conservative. Push preflop, failing that it is about as good a flop as you are going to get bar 223 or one with a T on it so get it in.

Is that Tribeca or Vegas Nights...

    GL BCB

You'll need it. Remember dont be tempted to minraise with AK in unraised SB...

As you've all said, the best trade off is call that JJ hand early on in tournie, consider folding it when youre getting paid. Feel i now have closure so can go to bed.

Cue Hectorjelly telling us the stage of the tournie shouldn't affect how we play the hand....??
