Mens health Question (very angry)

I have been meaning to post for a while now.

About a month ago I went to the local doctors surgery where there are a number of doctors working together.
I had a lump in my scrotum which I wanted to get checked out.

There was a woman doctor and she asked if I wanted to come back next week when the male doctor would be back from holidays. I said no that I wanted to get it checked out now.
She said that the other female doctor would have to be present and I said fine.
She went to get the other doctor and was gone for at least five minutes.
When she returned she said that the other female doctor says "that she doesn't see men anymore"

I was shocked but didn't say anything.
She said to come back the following week and see the male doctor. I went to a different town and saw the male doctor there who saw me straight away. He found nothing wrong.

I was very pissed off and I am going to ask for all my files to be transferred and let them know what i think of the service. Men die everyday from cancer as they are scared to go to the doctors. So how dare a female doctor refuse to see me.

Is there somewhere I can make a complaint about this?

If i were u id go on the radio and name and shame the pratice-I think its sick what they did!

Thats disgraceful, I had the exact same problem went to a women doctor and she checked it out no problem on her own. If your problem happened to a women it'd be sexual harashment.

Sorry to hear about what happened to you Sneachta.

While it was upsetting, I feel that it is more of a consumer issue than a personal issue. You might get better advice there.

CI mods, please feel free to move if you feel this thread is better suited elsewhere.

They probablys get men in there lookin to be felt and not having anything medically wrong with them... but she still should've seen you.

It was a bit harsh and unethical

How is it unethical? If its her usual practice to work only as a women's GP that's well within her entitlement and I don't see why it is considered unethical. Some doctors only deal with sports medicine, is that unethical? It isn't sexual harassment either.

OP was there was no nurse or male GP in the clinic? I can understand wanting to have another doctor present, but not another female one.

If you think you have a valid complaint contact the IMC

    for 50 quid a time? I doubt it!

The simple fact here is that this is sexual discrimination, If it was a woman and a male doctor it'd been on the news. Report them to the health board in writing.

She probably refused you because she was a female specialist and hadn't examined men in years. She probably felt she wasn't properly qualified to examine you. I doubt it had anything to do with 'your bits'.

Thats rubbish. I was at the doc the other day and she checked my bits. I've had female doctors do STI tests on me with no one else in the room. Was it a GP? I wouldn't have paid for the visit if they pulled that stunt on me.

    Hey guys,
    Thanks for all the replies.

I didn't pay for the visit.

The doctor does see men or did until recently and I know for a fact that she was alone in the room with a friend checking something similar out for him.

Go to the health board and make a formal complaint about the situation also if I was you i'd move my files to another practice as if they couldn't give a monkeys about your health then why should you give them business, whats concerning is what if it had been cancer and you had put it off because it was too much hassel to goto another Doctor.

    Religious reasons isn't a excuse, she's either a Doctor or she isn't.

    Hi again,

I am currently writing up a complaint to send to the Medical Council of Ireland.
If anyone can offer any advice on how to word the letter I would be very grateful.

    Cheers again.

I wouldn't expect too much from the Irish Medical Council. It's Doctors investigating Doctors. You may have heard about the disgraceful events surrounding the Dr. Michael Neary case. If I was you I wouldn't bother wasting my ink writing to the IMC. I'd try the Equality authority at www.equality.ie or some other state agency.

Yea....and the three doctors were found guilty of professional misconduct...what's your point?

I can understand where you're coming from but since you weren't a patient of the other doctor, she owes you no duty of care (this is in common law). Best thing to do if you're not happy is take your business elsewhere.

    It's all a load of b@ll's

To be honest I think you are getting worked up about this, and to blame it on sexual discimination is a load of crap. i can easily understand her wanting a witness to the examination considering the number of complaints that people make against doctors.

i wouldn't expect a female doctor to examine my hairy bits, i wouldn't have a problem with her saying no, it's her loss ;)

Yeah sure who cares about a potential cancer not being checked out immediately.

    Ahh, big bump.
