I think the point is that we need to nip this sort of behaviour in the bud. If we don't then next thing ya know people will be posting pictures of themselves with a baby hanging off their crotch!

Ok, where are you drawing this line? Whats the bottom age? I man, you can be any age and look at boards, just cannot post, and lets face it, you can lie when registering.

So, shall we get rid of the all the religious boards because someone form another religion may not like the others, should we get rid of the LGB boards and the personal issues boards because children can see them?

Lets get rid of the Simpsons on the TV whilst we're at it, plenty of adult humour there, broadcast at all hours of the day.

In fact perhaps Sky News shouldnt report on such things as rape, sex crimes or anything other than how Barney got on today untill after 9pm or something?

You cannot in all seriousness start calling for people to be banned, or subject to "heavy" punishment on the premise that some children may accidentally or deliberately gaze upon boards.ie.

In case you're interested, yes I have three kids, eldest seven, including a daughter. I find jokes about such things funny, that is a long way from becoming a participant. People find such jokes funny because they are shocking or out of the ordinary. Why else are people like Jimmy Carr and Ricky Gervais so successfull, that's the entirity of their routines.
Do you tell these child sex abuse jokes to your children?

Any more child sex abuse jokes here will result in a ban.
This is not the place for them.

    Another thought for you 6th...

Perhaps if a child is to stumble across jokes on the this (or any other) site, then maybe it might be up to his or her parents to supervise them while they surf?

Parents don't let their 7 year olds watch porn, violent movies or anything they deem unsuitable. Why should the net be any different?

I really dont want to be banned, so could you please clarify. Is it just child abuse we cant laugh at. Are racist, sexist, or man-walks-into-a-bar jokes still allowed?

I agree with you and I will carefuly monitor net access when my kids can use the computer. Porn sites state that they are for 18+ as do movies ... do you think that Boards should put in an age verification? Sex& Sexuality is for subscribers only ... why is that?

Of course I don't think that Boards should put in age verification. Where do you draw the line on the responsibility of parents to supervise their kids's surfing activity?

Are you so naive as to assume that if there's no 18+ warning on a website that it MUST be 100% kid friendly?

What about TV? Some stations have content in the afternoons that is meant for mature audiences, that while not showing explicit adult contenct, do allude to it.

Why should I worry about what I post on the basis that your kid might read it?

Of course I don't. I repeat them to adults, and in adult company. Why would I tell them those sort of jokes? I tell them jokes that are appropriate to their age.

    What a silly question.

My point is that as you object to such adult things being disseminated in a forum where children have ready access to surely the same can be said about television and television news in particular, with its tabloid culture focusing on the salacious aspects of any such case.

Actually, the same goes for newspapers as well.

As for the jokes? I don't think anything should be taboo when it comes to humour among friends, however, I certainly wouldn't tell a joke like that to a crowd of people I didn't know, for fear of offending. Yes they can be offensive, but they're also funny.

That hits the nail on the head, which is why there is a private humour forum on boards.

I think what happened on that thread was sensible anyway, the post was removed. Some people want bannings as a result, and a basis is given that children can read boards.

Fair enough. Can we delete the thread about sex in the next room keeping you awake, please, just in case my kids happen to read it?

Actually before this thread gets locked I would like to say that I do go against the Op on one major point.

He says that a victim would not find these jokes funny ... I was a victim of sexual abuse and have no problem with the jokes once told in the appropriate surroundings.

My point again is that its not right to make these comments flipantly on public forums (take it to Lolocaust).

I have come out as a victim sexual abuse here (not an easy thing) in the hope that people realise that it affects fellow posters who they wouldnt expect and in the hope that fellow victims feel that Boards is not a place where they need to feel ashamed or ridiculed.

I would also like the 6th bashers to see that I dont post to become a mod or for postcount++ but because I am a real person who has opinions based on life experiences.

Thats all I have to say on this and I hope the mods and admins on here continue to delete inappropriate comments which may cause real hurt or offense.

    cheers

    Mark

Out of the 78,000 board.ie members statically it is likely at least some are paedophiles. While that is not a crime if they have viewed or distributed child- poronographic material clearly that is. If some of these members are then making jokes on this forum about sexual abuse having engaged in this criminal activity, then you are obviously right to have a problem with it. That said i think most- if not all- of the people making jokes about sexual abuse on this forum would not be paedophiles.
They just have a distateful sense of humour in my opinion. There defense would be in a free society nothing is censored. A person i know found jokes about the holocaust quite funny yet jokes about paedophilia she detests because she was sexually abused. If you start censoring everything we will have little to laugh at because living is full of sorrow and tragedy and the best humor is usually borne from this. I think humour is a defense mechanism to make us feel better...
untill of course it happens to you then it isn't as funny. For example i was recently told a great joke about terminal illness. I doubt if this joke would be quite as amusing had i just discovered i was dying

If it was me taht started the thread then maybe but i'm responding to a thread appropriately. I ahve no problem with the fact that I was abused. I am the person I am today beucase of 'all' my life experiences and I'm very happy to be the person I am.

    6th......... what can I say............

Even though the original post was deleted it appears a quote of it was left. It was a joke, shock post. Fair enough, there were some idiotic "look at me I'm justifying myself" posts thereafter, and they were not neccessary at all.

That is just simple monging. Thats an abuse, but if you take such offense that it leads to such a daconian reaction - bannings , threats to take boards to "the authorities" then I'm sorry, you should stay away from such reactions and such posters. Use the report button, use the ignore feature, thats what they are for.

The reaction is not to suddenly say "I'm upset by that, so could others be, therfore I want the site to reflect that and modify itself"

Many posters on this thread have said stright out that they are the vicims of jokes because of their age, sex, hair colour. Jokes can be hurtful, and spiteful, as i said above, two of the most successfull comedianss today, Gervais and Carr, devote their entitre routines to such material.

it's amazing that people on this thread bitching about child abuse jokes are throwing around the word lolocaust

wasn't the Holocaust a far worse crime than child abuse, yet you all feel perfectly free to joke about that

-edit, just to be clear I'm not trolling here.. I'm actually a little offended. I think it's ok for me to make holocaust jokes, because I'm a soulless bastard.. but I really expected more from the rest of the world.

With a whole Universe around us and the incomprehensible breadth of the animals, vegetables [and you know who you are] and minerals within it, how could somebody possibly find themselves so stuck for joke subject matter that child abuse was the only remaining alternative ?

    - Well lets see; I've done big-nosed-rich-guy Jewish jokes, sweaty, desperate Fat bird jokes, Yore ugly, fat Ma jokes, Blonde jokes, Catholic Jokes........Mike doesn't really laugh at my funneh orphan Nigg-aaah jokes anymore.....[?].....ahmmm..........Dead baby jokes are so like 1st year in Freshers week in Yoooooonie...........The Playstation is on the Blink, theres fcuk all on TV and the batteries are dead in my remote control anyhow.......Hey maybe I can do something edgy and wicked funny about a child getting raped? That might make Mike laugh AND make me seem like I'm just too oh-ya baby, whats happenin? I'm 2 damn kool 4 skool......Anyway ya gotta laugh at this sh1t don't ya ? Don't censor me buddy - I'm creative, funny and deeply intellectual.....Oh ya, likin' me......I'm where its happening.......you come over here NOW for a wicked CHUCKLE baby ;)

    - So anyway is this really, REALLY a site where everybody runs around with a little brown stain in their pants over a certain concert promoter yet certain in-folk get to defend their witless, US frat-boy, puerile, ultra-low-brow humour without sanction ?

The "describe your first sexual experience" post is completely different. It's one thing choosing to have sex. It's another being forced to when your not old enough to even dress yourself and by someone 5 times your age! Cop the fcuk on! This is ridiculous! Racism is offensive. slagging off blind people is offensive. Jokes are funny, yes, but not when it's about something so traumatising it's that has driven many young people to suicide and mental torment.

Child Sex abuse jokes are hilarious, Child sex abuse or child abuse is wrong, both morally and legaly...

Tommy Tiernan laughs at himself, at others, at celebrities, and even talks about his youth and sex education...he uses daily tradegies and insults to loosen an audience... this is just a public joking debate with 77,999 other people...

For the fool's amoung us, what was being pointed out is this; People were giving out that these jokes should not be posted here as GOD FORBID children *may* be browsing boards and read them. However, there are threads that openly show pictures of sex (MS Paint style) or ask questions about ones sexuality etc.

However, South Park puts it perfectly and I shall quote both it and many people in saying this: "Either everything is OK to make a joke about, or nothing is".

The poll is a loaded question, or at least a question loaded by black and white answers. I'd imagine most posters (I hope) who voted yes meant that jokes about child abuse may be funny. I'd have no problem admitting in public that jokes about child abuse can be funny.

Just for the record, I didn't vote yes.

    Yes it is.

So are dead baby jokes, black jokes, nacker jokes, cancer jokes and every other joke. its just fun, people who dislike these type of jokes are dry humourless people with no life inside them.

A friend of mine was abused as a child and he doesn't mind any jokes like that.

My friends G/f has a really close friend that i met recently, she has MS and she gets pushed around in a wheelchair, she has to get a transplant soon too. But when she goes shopping and and she's pushed around in her wheelchair she makes noises like TIMMEH!!! and BLAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! pretending like she is mentally handicapped. just to embarrass everyone.

The way i see it if you don't laugh at any problems/situations/prejudices in life you will cry. i see you seem to be doing the latter.

Laughing at a joke like that doesn't make you racist, prejudiced, comfortable or whatever it just makes you human don't be afraid to laugh at everything.

Me? Why would I cry, this kind of thing has never effected me in any way, nor do I know anybody effected by child sex abuse. The question is not about jokes, by the way, it's about child rape.

If an RTE camera crew were doing vox-pops on Grafton street, and asked "is the rape of children funny", what would you say?

I think the question is misleading.

The origional poster obviously, as this thread has pointed out, cannot seperate a joke from reality. If you were to ask anyone if "Child Sex Abuse is funny" then pretty much 99.9% of people would say no. However, this thread was posted in response to a joke about child sex abuse, so the question would appear to be more "do you find jokes about child sex abuse funny?".

If the poll's question was stated, as above "do you find jokes..." I would imagine more people would have voted Yes.

At least 80% of people I know laugh at child sex abuse and dead baby jokes. But its probably as people I know have a sense of humour and dont have a gold stick up their arse on their very, very high chair.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,698 ✭✭✭InFront

well obviously i dont think anyone actually thinks child sex abuse is funny, actually i dont think anyone accept mentally unstable people would find any type of abuse (wether it be sexual or involving violence against any age group) funny but a joke about it would be.
