Which would be better for me? Im trying to save a bit of money and ive already been able to save quite a bit!

My friend told me the other day they have the new 320mb cards and theres not much different! So im just curious to know should I save the money and go for the 320mb card which is a €130 cheaper than the 640mb one

I will be playing games such as bf2 counter-strike source and half life 2

Also will be playing on a 20" monitor with max resolution 1680x1050!

Heres a review I read just now you could take a look at! Are those performance ratings in fps?

    linky.

    Thanks

Well, my Radeon 128mb runs battlefield 2 CSS and half life 2 perfectly fine. I can't see you needing something that powerful to try and max out those games.

Company of Heroes on the other hand....

Well its really just incase I decide to get new games(which I probably will)

I honestly don't think I would be wasting my money cause it started of €500 for a graphics card now its €305 so I think thats quite a saving for me :D

I just want to get peoples opinions to whether it would be a money save to go for 320mb one!

yea I was looking at the coh chart ive never even seen screenshots of the game.. must be great if this card doesn't get alot of fps out of it!

For the bang for buck the 320MB version is supposed to be alot better.

There will be a small drop in performance ranging from 5-20fps depending on the title due to the lower amount of RAM but you are still getting more than playable frame rates at 1680x1050 with 4xAA/16xAF.

Especially for BF2, HL2 and CS:Source which are not very demanding games so yeah go for it.

Yea actually I was thinking that all the brands have different prices im wondering will there be any difference in performance wise that way?

Yes possibly. Some Brands such as XFX and BFG pre overclock their cards so that they run faster then their competiters who's cards are at standard clock. Also I know with XFX at least they use very good quality components. other possibilities include manufacturers that fit their own or different cooling methods to the cards. HIS are a prime example of this as they fit Arctic cooling fans/heatsimks/ducts to some of their cards. Then the are the bundles to take into account some have many different leads and a few games whereas others may simply have the driver cd and manual .

These are all factors that add to the cost of graphics cards

I got the XFX 8800GTS 640Mb in my new PC three weeks ago and its great. It can run anything. The XFX comes slightly overclocked.

If you want to play games like Crysis then the extra texture memory will be a big help especially at higher res.

HL2 and BF2 will use 512Mb on a card at high settings.

If you want to future proof get the 640Mb.

I recommend you get the XFX 8800GTS 640Mb from Komplett.ie

They have it at a good price.

To get the best out of the card get a good CPU aswell or you will be bottlenecking the card.

I have a Core 2 Duo E6600 so as to let the card do its thing to the max without braking the bank too much.

Heres the setup I plan to get!

    2 gig Corsair 6400
    Gigabyte nForce-680i sli
Intel core 2 duo 6600 same as you!
and the 8800GTS.. Still deciding on which one to get but will choose depending on funds!

Im getting the XFX one though!

I actually dont have a job either so I cant actually make any more money over time. I have lent €200 to someone and am expecting it back soon thats why I have to wait a week or two.

Does the pc have a PCI-E or AGP slot?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

It'd have to be AGP really from those spec's I'd say

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭christophicus

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭dazftw

The thing is I wont be selling it until I have the money to buy the pc and I actually have it bought and setup nothing wrong cause if I sell the pc and buy the new one and it doesn't work ill have nothing to fall back on lol

Plus its only the pc on its own aswell...

Other than that I have no problems selling it to ya!
