    All
Please shed some light on the following question if you have the knowledge.

Myself and some friends work for a local company whom have a contract with Hartley People. If we apply for jobs advertised on there site with other companies sometimes we get a reply others we don't. Now we'd be more then qualified for some of the posts advertised so at least an interview would be in order but nothing.
I myself done an interview with Hartleys but heard nothing back on it, even a no thanks would be acceptable.
So my questions, anyone else have this problem? Whats goin on?
I believe Hartleys et al are not allowed to poach from one contracted company to another and subsequently ignore applications from job seekers.
These recruitment agencies are a blight on the job seeking public, they've inserted themselves between you and a job as an unnecessary middleman.

    Or am I completely wrong?

You're completely correct, in that recruitment companies are a blight and more of a hindrance to finding a job then a help. Particularly if you are a graduate, they're worse than useless.

All they are interested in is convincing people to take jobs that are beneath themselves in order to butter up to the employers with a fine range of candidates. They are far closer to the companies than to the job seekers, believe me.

The only thing I ever got out of a recruitment company was to be put on an email list where they spam you until the end of time. Only today I got an email from an Australian recruitment company that I was looking for a job from 4/5 years ago, I got an error when I went to the unsubscribe page! I get emails from countless recruitment companies, which are usually filled with that fake positive prattle and a list of jobs that don't exist. Similarly, when you read an add in the paper, I believe that the positions in the ads don't actually exist, they are just to entice you to get in touch, so they can offer you something bollox.

It is very possible that Hartley People have done a deal with various employers not to co-operate in re-placing their employees. This seems to be a common enough practice, although it is absolutely despicable.

The last time I was in Waterford I was looking for a job as a software engineer, which I had about 15 months experience in at the time. I got told what everyone in Waterford that has been to college and has a bit of a young look off them got told, 'why not join AOL?' So instead of developing software I would have been answering phones, that's just great that is -- so back to Dublin I went for another few years!

Every job I have ever gotten was through a friend, luck, or through a direct application. Apply directly to companies yourself, and stick at it. You might have to apply to 10 places before you get an interview, depending on your area/experience, but if you keep going you'll get there in the end. Never rely on those bastard recruitment companies, they're bottom feeders.

They're useless all right, all they ever told me was; there are no jobs for graduates in the South East, go back to Dublin or go to Cork!

On a side note I think I must be the only person AOL wouldn't give a job to, the interviewer seemed mystified as to why I wanted a job there when I had a degree in Physics, she kept asking me why I wanted to work for them with my degree, couldn't I find something much more related to it! (hahaha, yeah right, didn't she realise where she was!)

don't get me started with recruitment agents...as useful as a solar powered torch! Best to apply directly to companies, it will look good on yourself as you are showing motivation and initiative to get out there and seek jobs yourself.

I am in IT and I have used recruitment agents once (years ago). I found that the bimbo I was talking to on the phone had no experience in IT whatsoever. She was asking me the most dumb questions which was worrying because they will only go to a potential employer and sell you very badly. Needless to say the recruitment company are finished now...their the staff are probably either working in Peter Mark's or some estate agent's front desk!

Couldn't have put it better myself

I had one and only experience ever with a recruitment agency and believe me it was the last .

I applied to an advert for "software suppot engineer" .Just to cut it short i am more than qualified, just show me a pc:)

Anyways the pricks were advertising for AOL Technical Support:mad:

He asked me the most mundane questions about how to access driver manager ........jesus christ:(
After that question I left, just walked out and told him where to go for wasting my time after even telling what I could and Couldnt do + what I was certified in

Sure they ask you about IT 'keywords' that they have no idea about? How can they possibly sell you well?

One of them tried to show off to me once by telling me something along the lines of 'Java seems to be on the way out, and SQL is getting bigger (taking its place)' or something stupid like that. Which is the equivalent of saying 'toasters are on the way out in favour of hairdryers!"

This particular muppet then suggested I should go straight to Cork or Dublin.

Anybody else look for IT work in Waterford and get told by the Waterford recruitment people to leave and go to Cork or Dublin?

.... and then there's the "recruiters", most of whom have no firm knowledge of the particular industry for which they're recruiting... Hartley people are just one

Indeed, at least Fergal Hartley seems like a nice enough guy, but the business he is in is more degrading and sleazy than prostitution in my honest opinion.

Unfortunately I have had similar experiences of recruitment agencies in Waterford so now I refuse to deal with them.. I've 10 years experience in IT, mostly desktop support and sys admin type roles and when I informed them of the type of roles I was looking for, AOL was mentioned almost immediately..

Despite many an objection, they kept bringing up AOL until I just turned around and said that I had absolutely no intention of working for AOL in any capacity so please stop mentioning them.. After that the conversation almost dried up completely and I haven't heard from them since.

Another asked me where I'd like to work and I said in or around Waterford city, might consider Dungarvan for the right job.. then they jumped up and I was informed that they had the perfect job for me and would get the details.. it was in Cashel!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So stick with the jobsites and the usual local newspapers..

This is actually a really useful thread for people starting out looking for work in Waterford, because lots of us have gone through the rigamarole with various recruitment companies, and you never know whether it is 'just you' or whether it's everyone. Seems to be everyone. :)

It's no harm to send your CVs to recruiters, but most of the time they will do nothing for you, or they will send you for interviews for jobs which you are overqualified for, or which are beneath your ability. Apply directly to companies and apply often, and don't give up. :)

Anyone have any good experiences with recruitment companies? :)

there are some recruitment companies in Dublin who specialise in IT placement but to be honest a lot of companies would prefer to deal with people directly and maybe offer a referral scheme to their existing employees who have successfully got their friends jobs in the company. The company I work for in Cork operate like that, one of the top architects once told me of his complete and utter contempt for recruitment agents so say no more!
