OK so I was at a Comedy gig last week (RAG Week) and went to watch Neil Delamare (sp?)

One of his jokes was related to speeding in the UK (Speeding is not funny, kids, it KILLZZZZ)

Bear in mind, this was a JOKE and could be total bull, but got me thinking..

Here's the joke: "I was saying that and ripping along an NI road. Came to a speed check, and acted the bollox cause i was in an Irish reg and had Irish license. Police asked me if I had a UK driving license, I said no, so he arrested me."

Is this true, or bull? Obviously I shortned the joke and took out the funny parts. But in essence, is it true, that if (caught) speeding in the UK, and you dont have a UK license you can be arrested for the offence?

IIRC, it is true, I think I read somwhere that a guy in an Irish car got arrested for speeding in the UK and had to pay £200 bail. This could also be bullpoop, I'm not too sure.

Of course it's true, and it happens to NI drivers down here too. Once you are from outside the juristiction you can be arrested for a motoring offence as opposed to receiving an on-the-spot fine.

Maybe some one could back me up on this

South Wales Police are terrors for this. They will seize the car until the fine has been paid.

Surely you don't honestly believe that the Guards don't have the power to arrest foreigners on Irish soil?

That's more to do with fixed cameras.

    Same in Denmark.

You're safe from fixed camera speeding fines and penalty points. If you're pulled, you will be fined. I was in a car where we were pulled for speeding in Lithuania last year (we were doing 80kph and missed the sign where the speed limit changed) and we were pulled. The police officer took the licence from our driver and the documentation for the car and kept them while we drove to the nearest town to get Lithuanian currency (we were caught just after coming over the border from Latvia). No reason why Lithuania should be different from the UK/NI.

Certainly is true. My Brother-in-Law was held in England for over 24 hours.

Believe what you want. It won't change the facts. I'm just stating the facts and it's nothing to me if you belive it or not. Speed cameras are one thing but when stopped by the Cops arrests may follow if you are from outside the jurisdiction

There are certain stretches of motorway in Ialy where the Carabinieri will happily accompany speeding tourists to the next hole in the wall to get the fine for the books and the small *fee* for the special escort service.

You try and sue them for extortion :D

Regardless of whether you hold a UK or other licence you can be arrested if you are driving too fast.

Driving at 90 in a 30 zone will get you arrested, whereas driving at 40 in the same zone will just get you a fine.

I have an Irish licence but live in the UK. If you can prove that you live in the jurisdiction then you will most likely get a fine and be sent on your way. If however, you are not living in the UK and driving on an Irish licence, they may just arrest you if only to check you out with the Gardaí at home ;)
