would be better off giving them proper resources, more practicle ones. was listening in on a car chase a few months back, some guy stole a fiesta, brought it out the dual carriageway twords shannon and gave 3 cars about 20 mins of the runaround before he lost control and crashed into a wall. Oh, about 10 mins into the chase they were told by henry street they got the ok to use the stinger, guess what, between 3 cars not one stinger, wouldent it have been nice if they had crashed into another car instead of a wall all down to lack of a couple of hundred euro as opposed to €50k a car. get the basics right first guys, then go for the flash cars !

Saw one of those beemers yesterday morning on the N11 at Kilmacanogue. Slate grey 3 series unmarked with blue strobes in grill and through windscreen and with red strobing "fog" lights at rear.

A fine lookin' ban garda drivin the arse out of it - pulled over some poor muppet in a modded starlet; probably for driving on the hard shoulder as the traffic was heavy.

No distinguishing features when looking at it from the outside ie it had alloys so no missing hub caps with this one.

I problem I think she had when she drove off through the heavy traffic, with lights and siren, was that nobody was getting out of her way! - the lights are hard to see and her siren was not loud enough - either that or people were treating her like they always treat beemer drivers; by not moving over.

Couldn't get a pic unfortunately as the ban garda refused to pose.

    The safety of their members??

So that when your house is broken into and your 2.5L Family car gets stolen the gardai wont be left in the dust if they do engage in a pursuit.
If I saw them heading after it in a 318 it'd be time to ring the insurance company me thinks!!

Bertie utilises an Merc S320. I think an tUachtarán has a 7 series. ;)
AFAIK she has an S-Class too, recieved in the same order as the on at Dept. of the Taoiseach.

7 Series is most likely an ambassador or some such.....the Ministerial fleet is made up of Lexus, Volvo and Merc

Did it have the usual UHF and VHF antennae?

Auto Conversions in Clara, Co. Offaly won the contract in November or December to mark and install equipment in new Garda cars. The contract is worth is over €1.1 million. Don't know if this is for new BMWs or what. Maybe someone living down there could confirm?

Just a quick update on this, my brother rang me to say that he was passed by a silver 5 series touring on the M1 heading North. It was going hell for leather and had the embedded rear lights flashing as it past. He also said that it looked like there was no obvious aerials on the roof, but again it was going so fast he couldn't be sure.

Do Garda cars have to pay VRT?

When they are then sold on to the public is VRT paid?

It just seems to me they could make money by driving a car for a year then sell on to the public. ( its often done in Australia)

    Garda vehicles are VRT exempt.

So I assume Auto Conversions are firstly removing the indicator lights from the said Beemers? There's no need for them anyhow!

yeh, they need it, they lost the contract to provide ambulances to the state, it is gone to WAS in Germany!!

on another note, garda cars do pay VRT but it goes dfirectly back to the government, it's in statute and they are obliged to pay it so they can get a reg plate. they do not hpwever pay motor tax or insurance as if they have a crash, you will be paid by the state

one afternoon i was stuck in traffic for an hour, then a camry with the siren on, starts flying through town with a 7 series behind with what looked like an ambassador, there was CD on the plate. I was really annoyed that these elitists can speed their way through town for some meeting involving finger food and bottles of bubbly while people like me are stuck in traffic.

Yet another example of our government supporting foreign businesses over indigenous firms, but I'll take that one over to Politics. ;)

It will be great if the Gardai get all these resources they're being promised like Automatic Plate Recognition, Digital Radios, Stingers, VASCAR. I always wondered why the Gardai aren't out pulling people over for dodgy driving (or even stolen cars) rather than having fixed speed checks, checkpoints etc.

I actually had a near miss with a Garda car in Donnybrook a few months back. They just kept on going. I wasn't too sure who was in the wrong.

I'd say if you got pulled over by one of these new beemers you would need a change of underwear. Kind of says "We mean business".

I've seen a quite a few of the GTC cars and haven't noticed any extra antennae on them yet. They're very well done and very effective.

If it was an open tender then the indigenous firms lost it. Pay more taxes for less-then-the-best service just to prop up "indigenous firms" is a silly short term strategy that does more harm to the economy then good. It seems though that in this case the indigenous firms pulled up their socks and decided to compete and they won the BMW contract.

the ambulance service opted for these vehicles as the ones donw by wilker in clara weren't of great quality and the transit was not fit for the job and the brakes/suspension didn't work on them at all

they opted for the german models because they are designed to last and the mercedes have more power and brakes etc..

photos of both models on www.flickr.com/photos/medic112

scrool down the page to the mercs

Touché, perhaps it's the indigenous firm at fault then.

BTW, anyone interested in buying an ex-garda 3 series in three years time? :D

Horrible to think of what those cars are going to go through.

Nothing new, they had something far superior to any BMW 535is & 530ds introduced 10 years ago.

Did the gaurds get some Escort Cosworths a few years back or was that a rumour. From what I was told, they got about five and crashed three of them so they then gave the others back, apparently they weren't able to drive them.

I saw a Garda car crash one day outside the Bleeding Horse pub on Harcourt St. It was comical. They took the corner too fast and slided into the curb at speed.

lol, was actually going to put a question mark after that. I wasn't too sure.

Georges St -> Aungier St -> Wexford St -> Camden St -> South Richmond St

Some of the shortest streets in Dublin. It's all very confusing. :)

Lets just call it Kelly's Corner. :p
