I saw the Range Rover actually, they have a 03 Landcruiser too, with blue lights fitted to the rear light cluster (obviously not blatently)

Garda cars have to have a tax disc, but are exempt from paying road tax!

Well tbh the Wilker work on ambulances wasn't great a few years back anyway...but we could adopt the Belgian & French approach...stick in conditions that make it uneconomic for foreign bids to be able to win tenders...heard yesterday that the French kept foreign biofuels out by nominating a port (jetty) in Brittany...no longer than an S-Class to bring biodiesel ashore...the pipeline was 2.5" in diameter...needless to say the Argentinians didn't make the trip twice and the French managed to give the contract to their own

Needless to say the French are paying more for their fuel and retarding an important future market. The last people in the world to take lessons from is the French.

They also have (or had) an X5. Saw one a couple of years ago. So the Gardai driving Beemers is nothing new really.

But they're sustaining jobs in France instead of sending billions out of the country...that was the whole point...I'll agree that the French are not an ideal role model, but in this respect...they know what they're doing

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,626 ✭✭✭timmywex

certainly, the french have a good model but would it not be better to go with whoever will do the best job??

You really don't see the problem? The extra billions that the fuel costs them doesn't come from thin air you know - it's taken from consumers pockets. Those extra billions could go to competitive French industry further strengthening it or be spent by consumers creating viable jobs.

So instead of spending billions in subsidies that money could have instead been invested helping create wealth in France and poorer countries could develop profitable industries. Colombian markets are full of EU farm produce thanks to the CAP which supports French and EU farmers - this leaves Colombian farmers with only one crop they can compete with.

This is the problem with Continental economies they believe it's the governments job to control the markets and they are reaping what they sow with their high unemployment and low growth rate. Why did 300,000 French people move to London? They know where jobs and growth are and it's not in Paris.

Democracy, Free Speech and a Free Market are the 3 greatest ideas man ever had that's why the country that embodies them is the richest most powerful nation on earth.

    Artifically!

Not really....it would be artificial if they created the market for the goods, but since there's demand, and it doesn't make environmental sense to be transporting millions of litres of fuel thousands of miles...they're doing their part for their own people and the environment at the same time

Did the gaurds get some Escort Cosworths a few years back or was that a rumour.

Horrible to think of what those cars are going to go through.

indeed the gears on most of them are shot because of the way gardai are thought to drive in the advanced driving course and then theres annual mileage of about 10 times your average car

Auto Conversions in Clara, Co. Offaly won the contract in November or December to mark and install equipment in new Garda cars. The contract is worth is over €1.1 million. Don't know if this is for new BMWs or what. Maybe someone living down there could confirm?

AFAIK most garda equipment to BMW's and other garda cars is not done by these guys

Saw a van get pulled over by a rather nice unmarked 07 volvo in town yesterday round rush hour. Very, very inconspicious, was driving along directly behind it for quite a while, and was completely unaware till the strobes and sirens came on.

I saw one of the new Garda BMW's last night giving a strange escort as they where in the middle with a S-Class 06 black Mercedes in front with no flashing lights but a CD plate and an older S-Class following close behind.

This was near the Castleknock gate of the Phoenix Park.

I think it was a 5-series model, all I can say is that a black BMW looks very cool with blue flashing lights built in to the rear lights.

Although when they where trying to get onto the N3 no one would move out of their way at the roundabout from Castleknock.

The Beamers do armed escorts mainly for diplomats, the used to have Toyota Camrys! Imagine that, highly armed Gardai in a camry! I have seen the beamers in a non escort role though, doing traffic stops on the N4.

From Evening Herald 21 April 2008. Part of the article.

THE Gardai will use their fleet of new high powered BMWs next week as part of a global effort to cut the massive numbers of young people being killed on the roads.
Road accidents are the biggest killer of young Europeans aged between five and 25.
Garda Traffic Corps units recently took delivery of 15 new high-end BMWs -- 530ds and 525is -- costing up to EU70,000 apiece. One of the new cars, unmarked but driven by a garda in uniform shirt and trousers, was spotted near Gorey, Co Wexford, on Wednesday, pulling over a speeding driver.
Now the new fleet will be used as part of a worldwide effort during the United Nations Global Road Safety ...

    [end]

So 15 all together. I wonder how many are left!

Complete waste of money. The country is in a mess, and we're spending money on overpriced bmws.... :(

There are cheaper cars that are just as good.

Nah.. Sorry for going OT but the greatest idea man ever had surely must've been inventing the wheel.

Most of the (Police) cars where I live (Michigan) are unmarked, and have the lights inside the car. They have been wasting money here on unneeded cars as well though - the pic below is from the town next to mine (my city does not have it's own polce).
