What can one expect to see? I've never witnessed one of these before.

The moon will dissapear! Oooooooooh!

The most interesting aspect is that as the earths shadow crosses, the moon goes red. Blood red. Ooooooooooooh! :D

Wow, that's pretty ... ...funky(?). I'll make sure to watch out for it.

Saturday itself is meant to be showery, so we'll definitely have some cloud, and there is rain due on Sunday, so it could be getting very cloudy on Saturday night. :(

As to what you'll see Kevster, as those links demonstrate you'll have a strong disappearance of the moon at best or that copper-coloured effect at least. The total phase is good, but in some ways it is more dramatic seeing it come across and leaving again. We won't go into the details of umbra and penumbra and other technical terms associated with eclipses, but it's safe enough to say that it will be worth watching, particularly as you have never seen one before. Enjoy it.

Can anyone recommend somewhere good to watch the eclipse from? I was thinking of going to either Howth Head or else Dún Laoghaire pier to watch it over the whole of Dublin, but does anyone have any other recommendations?

Also it looks like the weather is actually holding up; there are no clouds at all in the sky (for once!)

Just looking at accuweather site it looks like we will be under at least 50% cloud by this evening.

It is looking good. There should be a good chance to see it.

Stargal, anywhere where you have a view of the sky will do. The whole thing will last for several hours. You won't be able to watch it all. It is best to take a look out every once in a while. Somewhere close to you should do.

Clear as a whistle in navan right now -looks good.

Have my 300mm zoom with a 2X teleconverter to get some good shots...

It's still clear from where I'm looking from - Waterford - Kilmacthomas Rural skies. Looking excellent right now. Simple tools. Binos and a digital camera. I have it on a tripod and will take a few photos tonight. Fingers crossed! Enjoy everyone! :)

Look out for Saturn to left and up from the moon while you're looking.

The evening started great, very clear sky and bright moon. Unfortunately some high level hazy cloud is moving across the sky in the last half hour and the moon is more or less a white blob.. Ah well i guess i have to wait until August for another shot.
Hope it goes well for the rest of ye..

how do you guys zoom in so far? my camera can go nowhere near that..

You need a long lens and dslr camera, something like a 400mm lens (or more if ya got the dough). Also some people attach their camera right onto the telescope to get even closer.

Why will the light from it become red? ... ...Something to do with wavelength lengthening?

Looks fantastic here in Dundalk. No sign of any redness yet, but we'll probably have to wait until its in the umbra for that. Assuming there's enough dust in the atmosphere, that is.

I don't think so. It looks like that here too. (although covered in a bit of a haze)

EDIT: Weird. I was answering #Elites below...

The red will be the earthshine from the earth's atmosphere when the glare of the remaining visible moon is cut off...
