Disappointing to say the least. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong.
Does anyone know the percentages yet? Oh and what was the turnout? Nothing is up on newswire yet.

Shanahan was ahead the whole way, and won on transfers. The others were hopelessly lopsided, I think Viv got about 90% of the vote.

Im chuffed, was canvassing for Quinlivan and Rath and supporting Shanahan and Colfer, we all worked very hard for it!

I wasnt at the count so I dont know the numbers, but all the candidates should be proud of the great effort they put in!

I'm pretty much okay with that... everything i voted bar education, and tbh i wasn't too sure about that...

I heard Rath got 85% of the vote.

Rath got higher than both Colfer and Brennan did - think it was around 87%

Great to see Shanahan win too - he really will work hard

Well done to quinlavan too, ran away with his too!

Congratulations are in order to RON so, if he hadn't spread his efforts over so many positions he might have taken President of Deputy President!

well both colfer and brennan got over 80% IIRC so they were more than comfortable as well

the only real race was education in the end

    How do you know?

because i know him very very well and thats the type of guy he is

  • Registered Users Posts: 100 ✭✭inverted_world

    How do you know?

Exactly... If he does push for the short loan only thing, I will be shaking my fist in his general direction.

In fairness though, that was my main reason for not voting him.

How the hell did Shanahan win Education? Now I thought all of the education candidates were as poor as piss but his manifesto was by far the worst of the lot and his lecture adressing compared to the other two was very weak aswell.

Well at least it seems a good president, deputy and ents officer were elected. Rath's manifesto was very weak to deserve 85whatever%. Well done to the winners, hopefully they'll actually do some work........

i was wondering that too, his manifesto seemed ridiculous to me, his lecture adresses were poor, and if he tries to turn the whole library short loan i'll scream. but then if he actually carries out any of his ridic promises i'll eat my hat!

I'm hugely disappointed but I think thats hugely because my candadate didn't win. But I also feel disappointed cos its now all crashed down on me realising that having a dominated right wing union is gonna lead to trouble... (anyone debating Barrys leaning has to admit, he was involved with KBC before so therefor has right ideals just like now he has some left but is no way either, or)

Oh noes dont be worried gubs. As long as theres a good class rep structure,a good exec and pros the union will be fine. I dont think Vivian or Ciara are that right wing?

Actually, Barry leans to the left a lot. He's definitely along the socialist lines. Which is about his only flaw as an encumbant SU president.

Having a gigantic campaign team, several times the size of that belonging to your oponents, helps....

i dont think it was fair to throw out Mallon from the ents race, i mean giving out free NON alcholic beer is not that big of a deal. its just another form of campagning, a fine may have been a slightly better slap on the wrist than outright dismissal.

There are strict rules against candidates spending any more on their campaign than that sanctioned for posters and manifestos. Mallon was aware of these rules.

as someone who general takes a backseat in this kind of nonsense, i can safely say this was the most uninspiring sab election i have ever seen. none of the candidates moved me to vote and nobody even got in my face about voting for their one. noone addressed me in a lecture and only one person shoved a manifesto into my hand. anyone else agree?

    He wasn't gonna win anyway.

He had, if memory serves, already broken some rules the day before.
If candidates are just allowed to hand out freebies, to buy votes, then the richest candidate will always win. Mallon waited until voting day to break to rules in such a way,and at that point they had no choice but to disqualify him. There was no punishment available that would have undone the extra support that he had garnered from his misdeamenour (it was too late to confiscate his leaflets).

I was thinking about the Mallon issue and came to the conclusion that they really had no choice but to disqualify him... what half measures were available? It was either all or nothing, really.

So glad for Viv doing so well. I was having a bite to eat with him yesterday (polling day) and he still was nervous about the results, I think with a bit of luck next year the SU should really get some good stuff done.

Hopefully Shanahan and Quinlivan will prove me wrong and do a good job next year, especially with the state Education and Ents was in this year. I was actually backing Lynam and Greene, but at least Shanahan and Quinlivan were my second choices.
I think Viv and Colfer will work hard and get a lot done next year.
To be honest, I haven't even heard much about Ciara Brennan, so I was hoping RON would win.
We'll just have to wait and see how thngs will unravel.

you would be used to that, being a member of Fine Gael :)

I'm very glad I won't be here next year. It's such an unbalanced Union and in an election year it's going to be interesting to see what happens. I'm very disappointed about certain positions, particularly those in which the winning candidates stooped so low as to actively attempt to sabotage their opponents in the lead up to the election and are also of questionable character.

Mallon HAD to be disqualified. If he hadn't been it would have set a dangerous precedent for the future. People are now aware that stunts like that are not tolerated. It can only be a good thing - except for Mallon.

    So tired. Must sleep.

Ugh, I don't like the look of the Union next year at all. I think it could be a battle to do anything next year.

It was only right that Mallon got kicked out, though last year Dave ents guy (I have no memory so surname is omitted) was giving out free cans of redbull if I remember correctly and was only fined and had manifestos taken off him.
