I had forgotten about the dogs and pigs :)

But yes, there was one invisible monster thing beneath a lab, that was creepy. But the general gameplay is just boring me. I might give it another shot.

    Good, stick with it :)
I think it's a game that gets better the longer you play it.

Yeah I got bored with it as well. For such a game its such a let down. Loading times are very slow the graphics are nothing special and neither is the AI, crashes all the time. They'll be releasing patch after patch for this for a long time to come. Nothing like it was promised to be. The only reason why any one is playing it at the moment is because there is nothing new out at the moment. As soon as any one of the other big games (and remember this is a "BIG" game) come out this will quickly fade away. It will never be regarded as a classic game.

Oblivion is able to stream load and so is test drive I can't understand why this can't stream load as well.

i have to say i'm dying to play this game but between load times and crashes, i've given up after a few hours. I've just bought some more RAM to make it 2 Gigs. if that doesn't help, i'll be burning this piece of crap and never buying anything these guys release in the future- that'll teach em :p:D:p

I've 2gigs, 8800GTX, Intel E6600 and I'm loading Stalker from a raptor drive and its still loads slow.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 10,520 Mod ✭✭✭✭5uspect

you can disable prefetching by adding " -noprefetch" (without " "' and with the space) to the target in the STALKER shortcut target. Should improve loading times apparently.

fair enough, but does it play well???

anybody go into the lab at yantar lake and get to teh part where you have to turn off three psi emitters. It takes away most of my life in one hit, is it just me or is it impossible?
MAybe I have to get more life or something.
    EDIT:
Also, does anybody else get huge lag in the arena, so annoying. Any way to speed it up in there? It's just a little fecking indoor area.

The game runs very smoothly at its highest settings without any slow downs. The new (beta) 165.01 drivers from nVidia make the game run even quicker. So I'm going to give them a try when I get home.

Up to my eyes in work at the moment! ;)

    Did you get the
psi protection from the Doctor first before you tried to turn off the emitters? Did you go take the readings with the other guy first?

Also, I've no idea why some people are having issues with Stalker, I've finished the game a while now and kept on playing, so I've probably about 25/30 hours racked up. So far it's crashed once, and I haven't patched yet.
Performance has been fine since I started using the tweaked config.

I got the suit off him, then the countdown timer starts. I don't know what you mean by readings?

I haven't patched my laptop and my performance is fine, except for in the arena.

well my 6600gt died last night (I swear I didn't over clock it too much!).
Anyway just ordered a 7000gt from dabs, we'll see how it does with it.

Question: I think I'm still fairly near the start of the game anyway got a question if anyone knows the answer to ?
The mission where you find the under ground stash and then find out what happened to Ghost as you near the marker on the map to leave the catacombs you see a stash in front of you & as you approach something comes up from behind. A monster of some sort it's all black like in a shadow and has a cool effect as it's pulls it towards you & it drains your life bar. It's just before you come up inside through the man hole in the military base where you have the mission to steal the documents.

Are you supposed to run from it or can it be killed ?

    What was that creature ?

Did I miss anything as the stash which I shot as I ran past did not seem to hold anything ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,967 ✭✭✭Pyr0

Throw a few nades at him if you have any, or just charge towards him and lay into him. Easy enough to kill. I've only came across two in the whole game.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 9,035 Mod ✭✭✭✭mewso

    8T8 -
Yeah he can be killed and I had to because going up to the military base was death for sure. The minute he appeared I ran str8 to him and got him with a few shots from the shotgun.

I might be thinking of a different place here, but you go talk to the Doctor, he asks you to protect another guy as he takes readings, then once the readings have been taken, you go back to the Doctor and he gives you the properly calibrated psi protection so you can go in to shut down the psi emitter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,371 ✭✭✭✭Zillah

I just remembered what made me go "Oh fuck this stupid game!"
When I was in the first underground area I was finding lots of artifacts. Then I got killed by monsters and when I reloaded my game it didn't update properly and all the artifacts were gone. Then I went into the military base, sneaked around very carefully, saved it in a safe spot, went on for a bit more and tripped the alarm. Got killed and reloaded. The alarm was still going; once again it didn't reset the world properly.

Nothing like that has ever happened to me, but an artifact teh scientists wanted was different when I loaded it once.

    negev.
this is x16 in yantar yeah? looking for the body suit?
I have body armour better tan the scientists protective suit and still the place destroys me in one blast, pretty much. They give me a countdown timer in which they say I will be protected, but I am not protected at all?
I don't know what you mean by the readings thing, i never had to do that?

Seems that the dev team did not 'steal' artifacts from HL2 & Doom3

I met that in a sewer, it only attacks when it sees you directly and you have a couple of seconds before the attack hits. So I just leaned out, popped off a shot or two and hid back again and repeated till it dropped.

I naded his ass and then ran in guns blazing. I must have stunned him cos he stumbled out into the open and just looked at me allowing for one well placed shot between those squinty eyes!

Just got this game and am very impressed...when it runs!!

It seems to crash every 5 minutes, with a bug report window popping up. Anyone have any ideas on why this keeps happening? No other games crash. This game really should have been tested more!

    My system is as follows:

    Motherboard - Asus K8NE S745
    CPU - AMD 64 3200+
    RAM - 2 gig DDR
    Card - Gainward 7800+ AGP
    OS - Windows XP home

There working on fixing the bugs at the moment but there'll be a few patches to go before they fix them all. The last patch fixed my save game issues but still crashes all the time.

I'm just going to wait for the next patch to come out then try playing it and see how it goes. I've never had any problems with any other games, just this one.

I'm in the same area, but different problem - I'm lost:
I've retrieved the stuff from ghost, trying to get out now. Went back the way I came, through the room where I turned off all the switches, back up the steps on the far side, through the way I came in, back to the bottom of a lift shaft which I came down. But the ladder ends halfway down, can't jump to reach it. The minimap arrow is almost on my position, but I can't go that way unless I go up the lift shaft?
I presume I'm supposed to go out a different way, what did I miss?

Cheers for all the replies went back and nailed it by rushing and blasting with an automatic rifle.

In the room where you got the socuments from Ghost there is a hold in the floor to the right in what looks like a shower or something. Its mentioned in Ghosts PDA, or in the audio clip your hear when you search him.

Ah, apologies. I am indeed. Lucky I didn't ruin it for you by mentioning the giant underground alien spaceship full of Predators! [oops]

I must have ghost mixed up with someone else. I'm actually losing track of who's who. With names being thrown at him every five minutes, no wonder this guy can't remember his own name!

5uspect, thanks for that, know where you mean - only place in that whole area I didn't bother looking. Typical.

Ah, I think you may be getting ahead of yourself slightly.
Once you get the suit from Sakharov, accept the main storyline task from him and then speak to Kruglov (the guy you escorted to Yantar) to start the psi-calibration mission.

You won't be able to turn off the psi-emitter until you've done that mission and Sakharov gives you the calibrated psi-helmet.

I'll give that a shot, I can do it if I use like a hundred med kits!
Hopefully he won't just say 'see you' as usual.
People met ghost alive? I have only seen him dead?

I'm pretty sure he's always dead, in Yantar

    Back with another question this time about Duty;
Is there a blocker on when you can join the Duty faction ? When I speak to the guard he tells me to go speak to the bar/trader about the conflict with the freedom faction but there is no dialogue for that topic & I'm wondering has something gone wrong.

Or is it a case you must do something or pass a point in the story missions to make the guard let you pass into the Duty camp ?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,111 Mod ✭✭✭✭Tar.Aldarion

If you join one faction, or do a mission against them for another, do all of the faction you acted against know of this and be your enemy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 812 ✭✭✭neGev

Yeah, I did a mission for Duty against Freedom and the bástards never forgot about it. Which made moving between the Army Warehouses and the Red Forest a bit tricky...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,757 ✭✭✭8T8

There is an exploit that allows you to stay on both sides good terms.
see the tips section of this FAQ. It's tricky but it works took about six go's to get it right. Still cant join Duty though & couldn't before I did the above.

What are the 'artifacts' you pick up? I've got a few of them, but when I attach them to my belt, I become irradiated and die :( (I know it says Radiation +5 in it's description, but what's the point of it unless I can attach it?)

At the moment, I can only carry 50 units in my inventory. Does this increase as I gain experience or is this the limit I can carry? I can't really horde much stuff to sell back at the trader.

I like the gun physics, although why does your silenced pistol bob around the place more than your standard Fort pistol?

In response to my own question there was a blocker on when you can join Duty so no bug thank god.

Fidelis - the artefacts are speical items created by the anomaly's in the Zone they have various effects some positive some negative or a mix of both.

At the start of the game you wont want to use them as they are more detrimental then useful but later you you will find ones much better with are useful like ones which pump up your endurance so you can run without tiring for instance.

The best thing to do with all artefacts you get your hands on early is to sell them to a trader as you will build up a lot of money.

When you enable static lighting the games runs in Direct-X 8 mode and disables certain visual effects, if you enable object or full dynamic lighting it works in Direct-X 9 mode but it is very slow to run but on medium/powerful systems the objects dynamic lighting is a good trade off.

That happened me too for a bit, but then I found an artifact that had Radiation something like -10, so I put that on with the -5, and you're laughing. Most artifacts seem to have positives and negatives, so it's a bit of a balancing act to combine them to get what you want. You can generally (in my experience) work it so the negatives are more than cancelled out by the positives, and you end up with an overall gain.

Also, the limit stays at 50. Which is a right pain now, because I don't seem to be able to carry half as much as I used to. I think it's because I've a decent suit now, but that's a lot heavier than my original one. And because I'm afraid to leave base any more with less than at least 200 rounds for my gun :D

That bloody silenced pistol is useless. Not only does it seem to do less damage, but I haven't found any situations where I got a great benefit by using it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,757 ✭✭✭8T8

Don't bother with pistols unless you really have to because your out of ammo they are by and large a waste and you find better pistols along the way like Big Ben.

Most of the areas in the game use a certain common type of gun and ammo up to a point so build up a supply of ammo for the machine guns till you graduate to the assault rifles later & so on.

The game is a hell of a lot easier if you avoid the story missions and go to the bar and get yourself an Obokan or the even better TRs 301 it makes all the earlier story missions a breeze though ammo will run low so return to the bar to resupply as the areas proceeding it don't stock the required ammo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,465 ✭✭✭MOH

I'm really starting to enjoy this now.
Love the whole approach to turning off the Brain Scorcher, nice being able to take on the military with a gun with a decent zoom, and those ghosts coming out of the road cost me half my ammo before I realised what was going on. And even then they still freak me out when I turn around and there's one on top of me

[edit] I retract all that. This is officially the stupidest game ever. [rant]
Very near what I believe is the end, fight my way through to the NPP, now all I need to do is find the wish granter. Looking forward to the challenge of fighting my way through a couple of dozen soldiers while low on ammo and currently with no medical supplies. Get past four or five, then get killed. Reload last quicksave, and instantly shotgunned from behind by the guy I just killed. Soon discover that enemies are randomly alive whenever I load a save. FFS. If you want to go the FarCry route and not have saves during the big final scene, fine. But don't have enemies randomly regenerating after the game is loaded. Grrrrrr/
    [/rant]

Looks that way Tar, there's apparently a free roaming option being added to the upcoming patches but that should have been added from the outset.

Yeah i just finished it there and have the same problem, cept i tried finishing it the other way (wasn't really paying attention to where i was going and managed to get the 'good ending' after a lot of annoying dying from radioation despite my bloody exo suit!)

Still though i'm kinda looking forward to playing it again in a while, maybe add a mod or two to change it a bit or play the game differently by being a complete bastard to everyone :D.

Didn't join Duty or Freedom this time either. Kinda ended up killing half the bar/town place when they all started firing on me due to the auto detect bull****. Annoying how they know you're a murderer even if you do it when noone is watching and with a knife- i needed his ammo!
Anyway, for some reason after i killed most the duty soliders that were against me the general voronin was still neutral so i accepted his mission. Came back with the goods and i find him along with 8 other bodies burning in the fire! Maybe one fell in and the others tried to help him or something!!! The AI can be either fantastic or really broken in this game, at least its always entertaining!

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 10,520 Mod ✭✭✭✭5uspect

I saw a guy fall into the fire once in the camp neat the freedom base, funny stuff!

    edit:
Here is one of my last save games. Its just at the start of the city before the NPP. I'm low on ammo, I've a radiation suit and my body armour is shot to shreads and well, well it'll have to do!

I've already been thru the city but not the NPP, I haven't joined any factions as far as I can remember and there's plenty of other stuff to still do.

If rapidshare in annoying you pm me and i'll email it.

edit2: I've just read that STALKER has
up to 6 different endings!
