Land Rover Defender???

I'm currently considering an old 4x4 as a second car for off-road/farm use. Don't want to spend much more than 15K. SWB for manoverability.

The sensible side of me knows a Mitsubishi Pajero would be a great choice (LandCruisers overvalued IMO). However... what I really WANT is a tidy LR Defender 90...with fat mud tyres...and maybe a even winch

It's a pretty basic machine so not much to go wrong - or is there (I know the Discovery is a POS)???? Has anyone first hand experience of old Landies? I'm not too concerned about refinement like i said it's a second fun/work car...

Bulk heads and floors tend to rot on old landies. have a look at a Landrover hybrid. They can be a combination of a defender chassis, a range rover body and a rover v8 engine. Or a defender chassis & body with a rover v8 engine. Or some companies in the UK can build new replica chassis and have them certified as vintage, after that the body and engine can be anything you fancy. All of these you can tax for €48 and insure for about €250.

Might be best to go over to the UK for a Defender, they have a good cult following over there and there are always well looked after ones for sale through enthusiasts.

A defender 90 is the only choice if you intend to work on it yourself. Have a look at Landrover parts on ebay in the UK compared to any other marque. I have a 1989 90 and a 1994 Discovery. Fun to drive and repair.

Is there much repairing involved?

I have a 90 chalked down as a future purchase sometime.

It really depends on the year of the 90 and its history. Go for the 300tdi if you can stretch that far. I do all my own repairs with parts bought from King 4*4 in Wicklow or on ebay. If im really stuck I just go to Kings, Brendan is the main man there and everyone is sound. I live in Wicklow and use a regular car Monday to Friday but at the weekends you wouldnt catch me in anything other than my 90.
