I'm thinking of using OSCommerce for a small shopping cart website.
Does any one have any experience of this or would they recommend anything else?

OSCommerce is great, though it does annoy me that the users have to create an account to purchase something. There is modules out there though to remove this...

Hmmm ... it's great as long as you don't need to extend it .... can be a pain as the code is a bit of spaghetti.

it is a pain to customize - adding in new panels, etc. plus its not very html code complaint (some people will bitch about that)

there are several other options...uhm who escape me at the moment.

I've found OS Commerce Very good when i used it in the past....

Have a look through all the modules that are being offered by different people, they even have one for all the irish post codes ect...

It is a pain that people have to register, but from memory there's also a module + a few edits that allow you to purchase products without creating an account.

If you decided to develop your own system, you could always use some of the Idea's from it, and quite possibly the database schema & data.

It might not be the best for as you put it a "small" site, it's got many features in there, probably more geared towards small/medium size sites...

maybe try out the cms joomla with the component virtuemart.

joomla is very easy to customize menu layouts and has a bunch of other features built in. like contact forms /news/blogs/rss stuff... the list goes on
