Europe may be the first region to get PlayStation 3 consoles that lack the PlayStation 2 Emotion Engine chip. It has been claimed other territories will also get the machine later this year as Sony strives to boost its profitability.

So basically ppl in Japan and the US got the best versions (early release) of the ps3 , wtf are sony on?

Maybe an IV drip of 'lets not go bust'.

They've cut out the PS2 chip but they can still emulate the games without too much trouble... you'll just have to wait for a few firmware updates to play the full PS2 back catalogue.

Just found this and all I can say is OOF!

    http://www.cynamite.de/ps3/news/more/abwaertskompatibilitaet_der_ps3_so_siehts_wirklich_aus/80987/abwaertskompatibilitaet_der_ps3_so_siehts_wirklich_aus.html

    From Babelfish:
Release of the PS3 in Germany is still scarcely two weeks away. Sony has, however, already supplied packed PAL consoles. After the message about the reduced downward compatibility of new PS3s we examined how well the the new machines play PS2 games. We tested twelve games. We tried to use popular titles for the test. We tried the following Games out: -

    God Of war
    MGS 2: Sons of Liberty
    MGS 3: Snake Eater
    Shadow of the Colossus
    Guitar Hero 2
Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
    Okami
    GTA: Liberty City Stories
    Eragon
    Final Fantasy X-2
    Ratchet & Clank 3
    Lumines plus

The result was: From the twelve games one ran, Eragon. All other titles refused the service with the reference to future software updates and the Sony Website downward compatibility.

Huh -- it's like Xbox 360 all over again!

But 7 awesome games not working doesn't sound nice at all.

it's trying to do BC on a machine that hasn't had the software update required to do it. fine, getting your hands on a Euro PS3 is one thing, but managing to get the patch due on launch day to run BC is near impossible.

If my PS3 doesn't play PS2 games, I'll be bringing back. Or selling it for big money to a village idiot.

I agree with you on this point. Until the official patch is made available along with the official list, its all just rumours and bashing from the media as PS3 hate stories are popular ATM.

    http://kotaku.com/gaming/eragon/pal-ps3-backwards-compatability-progress-update-244005.php

    # God of War
    # MGS 2: Sons of Liberty
    # MGS 3: Snake Eater
    # Shadow of the Colossus
    # Guitar Hero 2
    # Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
    # Okami
    # GTA: Liberty City Stories
    # Final Fantasy X-2
    # Ratchet & Clank 3
    # Lumines Plus

    Don't work

but 72% of the PS2 library will apparently work with firmware 1.6
