    I have eircom 2mb/20gig p/m package. When i am downloading, the speed is in and around 200kbits/sec on the progress bar.

    Is this about right?

    Thanks for any help!

    That's 200kBytes/s! There's 8 bits in a byte. :)

    Generally:
    b = bit
    B = byte

    However, some programmers are lazy and do it wrong.

    So you are roughtly getting 2Mbits/s as there is an overhead.

    That's pretty much the maximum I get on my 2Mbit/s line as well.

    one simple way. try downloading any big files using internet explorer from three different websites and on each one IE will tell you what you download speed is while the download is going on, if your getting about 215-245 in the way IE's downloader displays the speed then its working at maximum.

    hope this helps.

    Have you confirmed that your line is capable of 3Mb?

    You don't sign up for a definite speed - its a contended product and the actual speed you may get depends on a number of factors. You sign up for a speed up to a particular level. No ISP guarantees a particular speed.
