Im just back from the Azores a new destination from Ireland this year. Its good for anyone who wants a back to nature type holiday. Amazing scenery and nice people. Whale watching trips and natural springs. A real different destination.

Might be worth expanding on this, should you care to, as others might benefit from it. Moving it to Travel Reports and Reviews in the mean time

Do I have it right that one flies to the small island and then has to get a ferry to the big island?

Hi no the flight is from Dublin to Ponta Delgada which is Sao Miguel Island. Its the main island. You can then get a ferry or flight in the summer to neighbouring Islands like Teceira or Pico. For more info go to www.visitazores.org and for packages www.sunway.ie

I'm thinking of going here in June with the girlfriend. Is it reasonably priced in regards food/drink and accommodation? What were the highlights (and lowlights)?

    Cheers :)

My mistake. I was thinking of the Madeiras.

Anyone else been? Any idea on the ideal amount of time to stay there, e.g. is 2 weeks too long? Is it easy to get around if your based in one hotel? Any other travel tips?:)

I have a quote for Ponta Delago in Sao Miguel. This seems to be one the most popular destinations (not necessarily a good thing). But I haven't booked anything.

I'm looking for suggestions on where to go. I.e. which islands, etc. How to get around? etc. Thanks!

There is this thread in the neighbouring travel forum - and a few other threads too.

My Friend & her husband were just there for a week, a week is enough they said as it's small unless you are into exploring the other islands, they both said it's a really unspoilt uncommercialised place to go. Plenty of lush greenery around - the climate is much like our own - lot's of rain but it was 23-25 when they were there 5 days out of the 7, Rain the other 2. The food is meant to be amazing, best potatoes they tasted in years! Cabbage is also on the menu! Everything is fresh and healthy and you dont see bill boards advertising Full English/Irish breakfast at every turn. They recommended it anyway, they were both concerned to see what looks like a giant high rise being constructed down at the bay - they asked the locals why are they going to let their beautiful islands be ruined by these eye sores, and advised a 2/3/4 story limit like Lanzarote has. They were interested to hear this. I'd like to go myself next year.:)
