Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Update on this: I can retrieve my mail from Vodafone.ie really fast with the mailbox type set to IMAP. But I seem to have to use the 3 IRL SMTP -neither .Mac nor gMail will work. I created a gMail pop mailbox and can't get that to either send or receive :-(
did you get the gmail app? i got gmail working on my phone yesterday. and are you using the datacard or a phone?

Teething problems yes, thrinda said it would be resolved today.. I just wanted to see if others on similar add on were having the same difficulties. Obviously not much take up on the bundles here on boards just yet.
Just to clarify, I'm not using my N73 as a modem or pass thru, just using the handset itself and the built in mail app with the Mobile Broadband 100MB bundle.
do you know if its possible to do that? i can't get one touch access to work using the nokia pc suite. keeps failing to connect

What is this 'age verification' on three to come in to some sites all about?
it's for prepay customers so they can't browse porn on the phone. bill pay customers don't have to do it

It's also worth noting that calling Voicemail via 171 is now free too.

I'm very impressed with the rates, I was considering changing network, but now, I think I'll be staying.

Got myself a nice W850i too. Very pleased with the handset so far.

I was on talk&text 600 split down as 300mins + 300 texts
Now on Talk 400 + a 200 message bundle which makes way more sense for my usage.

Using the phone, there is no problem checking any of my mailboxes using the datacard ( I rarely use it because it forces me to use windows; roll on the USB modem).

Is there a dedicated gMail app? Where do I get it?

Ok ive been out of the loop for a few days which is a first for me with 3, just went onto planet 3 and noticed all this add on stuff very nice but i've a v3x would this unlimited broadband do me any good? ya it would be handy to check the gmail once in a while on the phone but is it worth €19 a month hardly
what else is there too it?
Im hearing skype but that will hardly work on a v3x
I do like the idea of using it as a modem though

If you want to just browse the news, a few wapsites a few videos etc then they do an add on for 5.99 which gives you 100 megabytes of data per month. Theres a gmail java app that you can get if you access gmail.com from your mobile.

Haven't tried yet. It's supposed to possible easily enough, however its not set up their end it seems!
As I said, anytime I try to access the web via the safari based web app on N73, which is different to the "services" web app that 3 use on symbian handsets, it doesn't work, same for setting up mailboxes, no joy. Using the Gmail app, I can see my updated mail no problem, but if I try to set up gmail as a pop based mailbox on the phone, sans gmail app, no joy. So what allows the gmail app (as well as Resco News rss reader) to update no problem while accessing the proper web browser on the phone is not possible?

Thats the question which is the crux of the issue at the moment...

Mildly frustrating..seriously, don't launch anything till its well and truly ready ffs. ...if it can go wrong it invariably will go wrong, so have a plan to resolve it in place beforehand... my 2c.

A ports setting mayhap? They advise opening various ports within Apple Mail when setting up.

i've done a few google image searches and looked at a fair amount of porn :D and browsed boards and bit and its only taken 2 megs so far. managed to do that in a day though. sure try it out for a month and see how it works out. you can check your usage so you won't go over without realising
quintron wrote:

java. didn't realise there was a symbian version. /me goes to look

edit: i selected n70 and it gave me a link to the .jar version. odd.

i don't know. they still piss me off a fair amount but e4 a month for unlimited calls to my gf is almost too much to refuse. i'll still need to carry two phones though because they can't match AFT for price. i'll have to see

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,201 ✭✭✭quintron

This is ridiculous. Just got off the phone with three. they said I could not access my own mail (not that 3mail bulls**t) through the mail app on my N73.
I have to go thru the services menu and go to the online version of the mail app????!!! Ya know, those slow and cumbersome front end website mail mgmt apps.......
Unlimited? please...

Sorry, but if I have to deal with another rep saying "I understand how you feel.. but..." I will lose it.
If you cannot access mail through the built in mail application (as it was designed to be used) with an wide open bb connection ..which you pay for.. its crippled.
Someone please tell me that last rep was an idiot...

Fuming.

I have a feeling it's only allowing HTTP traffic to pass through the connection. IMAP, POP and SMTP don't seem to work from my handset.

Gmail's app works fine, but I suspect that's using HTTP too.

couldn't get other messaging apps to work either.

3mail's practically unusable though as it shares space with your voicemail i.e. once you exceed the quota your voicemail stops accepting messages .. which is a BIT screwed up in this world of spam.
It will work off your handset though (and always has)

Set up your client with
3538xxxxxxxx (whatever your mobile no is as the user name)
It will be pre-configured with the number that was on your SIM, you'll need to modify this if you ported to 3.
Password = your 3 pin as set with them.

I had it setup like this:
Setup my email to forward all new messages to my 3mail account.
Set a reply to address as my real email address in the phone's client (Sony Ericsson)

Fairly seamless result.. only problem was the quotas. 3mail would end up full very quickly as it has quite limited storage capacity. A few large attachments and some spam.. and voila it's full.

Well thats not listed anywhere on their website. The 3mail mail app is pathetic. The online hsphere app is slow and cumbersome. I have a phone with mail et al built in and I cannot use it? The main reason I went for the package was for mail and occasional browsing on a proper phone web browser, not pissing around with http based pages down their slower 3 services pipe.

I was told yesterday by a rep that pop was supported and that they were having technical difficulties... tonight a new story. I've been misinformed.

Fring uses http and that doesn't work either.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,201 ✭✭✭quintron

Its official. 3 do not support pop access ..period. What a joke.
Your 100MB or whatever allowance on your phone is only for mobile web browsing or using 3mail according to the three rep. Forget many 3rd party applications that require a data connection to update data, (though frustratingly and strangely some do work...gmail app for example)
For mail
You can set up other mailboxes (ie your work mail: quintron@company.com) via 3mail but your replies will always come from your 3mail address!
Great way to do business... Someone sends you a mail to quintron@company.com.....you're out and about... you need to check your mail.. but hit reply and its generated from quintron@3mail.ie.. so he/she after receiving your mail replies and of course it goes to 3mail.ie instead of company.com.. Now thats just dumb. Hard to track messages and forget about continuing a thread once you get back into the office.

Sure, cheaper, great... start using it and then you hit this brick wall...

I'd rather pay more for a data bundle I can actually use rather than a "services limited" data package. I cannot use the mail or web app on my phone.

€6 per month is certainly cheap. Useful?.. not unless you use it as a modem... or check your mail and don't reply till you get back to the office..
It should be listed in T&C.

Disappointed.

quintron, a colleague of mine ordered a 3 phone with data add on. If what you say turns out to be true, it'll be going back straight away. This sounds like a joke. Maybe you've missed something, or your account is limited because you need to call them and verify your age first?

No mate. Spent 50 minutes on the phone. I'm on bill so no age verification needed + I'm well past the age of consent :-)
Using either the built in mail app on the N73 or Profimail, my personal preference, I cannot access any mail that is not 3mail.. so basically... my mail!
Guy was pretty clear. He said he was aufait with technical aspects of apns etc yet he didn't really know what he was on about beyond stating that 3 do not support anything outside the services browser, and that three have worked closely with Nokia in creating specific firmware for their handsets which alllow them to channel everything through the Services or Planet 3 browser.
He even said X-Series in UK does not support pop access at present.. a double whammy.
I went through it all with him in great detail, explained how some things work through the 3 access point (resco news and gmail) which work independent of the services menu.. and.. guess what... he basically said that it was a fluke and that he would look into getting it blocked! Those were his words.... before he backtracked a bit and said he would raise my "concerns" at the next team meeting.
I asked to speak with everyone. No joy... read him the riot act, outlined 3's failure to mention this specifically in T&C (tyo which he replied that they are covered by the vague statement that "service limations apply".
I compared 3's data plans to both Vodafones and O2's, complained about these hidden limitations, expressed my shock at basic pop/smtp not being supported, my outrage at the misinformation from other 3 reps before I purchased the add-on. And many other permutations of the above.. basically the whole 9 yards. 3 rep getting shorty asking what should he do etc etc..

I'd have a hard time using 100MB in a month simply browsing sites thru their services based browser, while my mail and safari based web browser (which I use regularly on my Voda E61) sit idly by.

Its crippled for me. A e400 handset that cannot use the software to its fullest with a data plan labeled as unlimited access.

Again as I said before, use it as a modem with your laptop, people have been successful with that (I believe?) but as a standalone phone data package it's pretty useless for me especially when you hold it up to the other networks true all you can eat data plans.

I hope I'm wrong but 3 x 3 reps have said this to me in the past 24 hours (2 in Mumbai and one in Glasgow), they also said they were consumer demand driven and that my er.. "consumer demand" for pop access was clearly in the minority so... suck it up is the message from 3 today.

i have 3 programs on my phone that are working perfectly: AFT, gmail and opera mini. i don't use the 3 browser at all. if you ring meteor they'll tell you gmail won't work but it does. i'd say keep trying

having said that, it looks like 3 may be f*cking the whole thing up for no reason again with their retarded policies but i'll give them the benefit of the doubt for the moment

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,201 ✭✭✭quintron

CV I'm aware those programs work.. Gmail fine, Opera okay (symbian version)

The frikkin mail app doesn't. They have confirmed they don't support pop..nuf said.
Obviously some http based commands from third party apps work thru the 3 apn (gmail, resco, aft) but others do not.

Mail=No
That=Problem!

Have you tried using the phone as a modem? I'm not big on these Java apps but I recall I ran an IMAP e-mail client on my old O2 phone and it needed to go through a proxy to get to my IMAP account. From memory there's a limitation somewhere that only allows J2ME apps to use HTTP or some such. I guess the e-mail app on your phone shouldn't have this problem but if doesn't support IMAP then it's pretty useless one way or the other I would have thought. Anyways, if you hook it up to a PC then it should be very clear if any ports are actually blocked.

Haven't tried to use phone as a modem just yet. But I certainly will when I have the chance. The issue is with the handset though. Gmail is the only java app on my phone that access a network. All others are built in or sis files. pop access is fine for me. no need for imap here. Mails final destination is Outlook. If I need to pick it up out and about the messages will be on the server... if I could get to them using the mail app that is...
I'm messing with mail2web at present as my only option...
Sad really.

I wonder does ORB work on the N73 with the unlimited broadband package. I'd be interested in this. Knowing that it is part of X-series then it should work but will it now in practice?

Just to clear any confusion: X-SERIES in ireland has not be released yet! Someone mentioned that fact that N73 is on sale by Thre now, but N73 does not equal X-SERIES. It will come later. Orb will probably not work, if it's not using HTTP.

Now you can pick up emails on your mobile. It works just like it does on your PC. And it's synchronised so you can read, create, reply and delete email messages, without having to check for new messages.

It works with practically any ISP as well as POP3 and IMAP4 email service (which basically means you can use webmail like Gmail and Yahoo! Mail as well as desktop email).

Re above, yes, but this could just as easily be all your mail routed thru 3mail and 3mail set up on the mail app. Just like the guy said it worked on the phone yesterday. x-series is different from mobile broadband undoubtedly but I'm not yet convinced that true independent pop/smtp access is available on an x-series services that is not first and foremost routed thru their three mail service...

Besides this should be available on mobile broadband..

I'd be delighted if someone proved me wrong about x-series and unadulterated mail access and will wait patiently for it to materialize over here if thats the case.

But ultimately my argument is not about x-series as its not here and I have not tested it... but rather the current mobile broadband offering.
