Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

To sum up, would the following be a fair reflection of the pros & cons of switching to 3 (Pay Monthly) ?

    Pros:

Cheapest Data Plans i.e. 3 New Data Add On's

    Best 3G Network Coverage

Roaming 'Like Home' on 3 Networks Abroad

    Cons:

    No POP3 E-Mail Access

Phones can't be unlocked ( Can anyone confirm this is true?)

    No Free WebText

thats a very simplistic view of it. there are some more pros and a good few more cons.
for example, 3 like home is great but the roaming can be quite dodgy anywhere else. i don't know if they've fix the multiple text problem and they still don't have a roaming agreement in australia

some of them can't be unlocked, ie the bb5 nokias and the k800 afaik

"Best 3G coverage" depends on where you live. In Ballyhaunis, a fairly significant town in Mayo where Vodafone have had 3G coverage for years, they still don't have any. Overall, I think they do have slightly better coverage than Vodafone, but it depends on where you live/travel/etc.

Also, Vodafone will fall back to GPRS speeds where 3G isn't available. I don't think you can use GPRS with this add on: if you're not in a 3G area, you're out of luck!

I now know where to get BB5s from 3 unlocked, incidentally.

Apparently when you send abroad an SMS can be repeated many many times on the recipients handset, just like in the bad old days of SMS in the mid-90s (especially when sending for free using foreign SMSCs). Come to think of it, while 3's case may be extreme, the problem has never gone away completely and often roamers encounter the phenomenon (the irate phone call "ok, you can stop now, I got the point" or "why did you me that message twice, three times, four times" etc. when of course, you never had any control over it and were not guilty).

Is it a complicated process? Or do you have to pay someone to do this?

It works over gprs.. I posted my previous post in this thread over gprs. In fact in stark contrast to my 6680, my N73 is falling back to 2.5G signal quite easily. No 3G/No Bars signal here. It readily seems to go onto the 2.5G signal when there is no coverage. During a recent trip to Cork it did a better job than my Voda/E61 at keeping a signal. Theres an improvement there somewhere..

Still can't forgive them for no pop access though! .. ludicrious..

    Hi

I transferred from O2 to 3 7 days ago because I wanted to avail of the unlimited broadband add-on.

On Tuesday 13th March my phone account transferred and I could make calls with my old number from my new 3 phone. I could view all Planet3 content like Tom Dunne, music video's, My3 etc. However, any time I try to access a non 3 page, eg RTE.ie, BreakingNews.ie, Entertainment.ie etc. I get the following message - "Full access to the Internet is available to Pay Monthly and Pay As You Go customers" and I'm prompted to "Buy Add-on". When I follow the link and try to buy the unlimited broadband add-on in My3 - I get the following message "You have all available Internet & Email Add-ons"

I ordered the add on when I transferred my account to 3.
My3 tells me I already have the add-on.
3 telephone support also tell me I already have the add-on. (5 times)
    • On the 13th of March I rang 333. They told me to wait 24 hours for the system to fully provision my account.
    • On the 14th of March I rang 333. They told me to wait a further 24 hours for the system to fully provision my account.
    • On the 15th of March I rang 333. They told me they knew what was wrong and to wait 24 hours for the system to fully provision my account.
    • On the 16th of March I rang 333. They told me an error must have occurred and to wait 72 hours for the system to fully provision my account.
    • On the 19th of March I rang 333. They told me they knew what was wrong and to wait 24 hours for the system to fully provision my account.
    • Today, I'm still getting the same "Buy Add-On" message. I rang 333. They told me they know what was wrong and to wait 24 hours for the system to fully provision my account. I asked to speak with a manager, one was not available and I was told they would contact me in a couple of hours. 5 hours later I'm still waiting for the call.

Has any body else had this problem? Is this typical of 3? Any suggestions?

Thanks for listening to my rant :)

are you typing in url eg http://rte.ie or are you going to "internet" from planet 3 and then selecting rte from their "approved" sites? The latter will not work. However if you type in rte.ie directly it will work. Odd i know. If this does not solve your issue, apologies. Its a particular issue as opposed to a 3 teething problem.

I have tried every single method I can think of...

Clicking links to approved sites from Planet3
Clicking links from yahoo search results
    Manually entering addresses, rte.ie, www.rte.ie, www.google.ie.
Trying my SIM in a different phone.

All result in the same problem - I'm prompted to buy an internet add-on. However, when I go to buy the add-on, I'm told I laready have it.

Thanks for the suggestion though :)

    Was this on 3pay?

Yeah, I found out the page was http://iethree.widerweb.net/_access/setOptions/ but you can't get to that manually I don't think, as they stick the first part before every address.

They're only temporary anyway, and if you choose the recommended option for encryption you can't log into any sites.

They better sort out the lack of https access.

    Some recent developments......

    3UK Have removed the w950i from their X-series sub-page.

3 Italy have now added '3 Like Home' as an option on their home page and in the fine print make it clear that data (traffico dati) is part of the deal.

A shop in which you gotta pay: takes two days.

What I don't understand about the 3 datacard (as I'm here in France) is why it doesn't work abroad? I know I'm roaming, I understand '3 like home', I just want to use it and pay if I have to.

However, for those that need these things, I ordered a SIM from Breizh Mobile online prior to going (breizhmobile.com). This includes data and worked immediately on pairing it with a MacBook using a SE v800. No especial fiddling, it just worked. Only trouble was, it used up my credit real pronto. But, it was useful.

The reason it won't work is that 3 have, for want of a better word, crap roaming deals. And they don't seem to be saying much about what they're doing to improve things. A simple announcement such as "Hey guys, we know we don't have many roaming partners for data right now, but we're working on it and making progress etc" would go a long way.

Oh well. No doubt one day it'll work.

Just noticed that I have the same problem as BlahDeBlah. I bought an N73 in a 3 store at the weekend and added mobile broadband for 5.99. My number was ported over yesterday from Meteor (time delay was fine as I still had the old phone).

While waiting for my number to be ported over I was playing around with the internet access and I could access several sites .. rte.ie and open24.ie for example. I also downloaded the gmail app and it worked fine. However, today nothing works not even 3's own link to rte.ie or breaking news etc. I get the same message as BlahDeBlah. I can see in My3 that I still have x kb left to download this month.

I am wondering if it could be that the broadband was added to the temp number I had before my own number was ported over but not to my own number? I have not called 3 yet.

Update on this. I called 3 just now and was told that while voice and text will work as soon as the number has been ported over the add-ons may take up to 72 hours. The guy I spoke to seemed to have come across this before and gave the impression he knew what he was talking about. I will wait 'til Friday afternoon (i.e. 72 hrs after porting) and if it doesn't work by then I will call them back.

Ahhh - the good old "72 hour" routine. Yes, I'm familiar with this. I was told to wait 24 hours, then another 24 hours, then another 24 hours, then 72 hours, then 24 hours again and then another 24 hours. It all changed today though - today I'm told to wait 48 hours.

I've been talking to Arpita, Billy, Tracey, Kris, Craig, Kevin, Donah, Paula and Claire. If you get thru to one of these guys on Friday, let them know BlahDeBlah was asking for them!

Seriously though - let us know if it starts working for you :)

Damn, I've been using the internet for over a week now and only today are they looking for age verification. I've paid for it but I can't access it until I have enough free time to get into a 3store with a passport.

out of interest... (and forgive me if this has been mentioned before or is staring me in the face), what kind of upload and download speeds are people hitting on the broadband service?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,174 ✭✭✭1huge1

^^ wouldnt it only be 3G speeds? like 384kb/s althought if you have a hspda phone id assume youd get 3.6mb

Has anyone tried using vpn with thier phone as a modem on either 3pay or pay monthly? Also can anyone confirm if the bundled data for the package includes data used while roaming on vodafone's network due to no 3g coverage?

That's interesting, because I never could get that working. I'll post a review soon. For now, I'll just say that I had to return it, because I couldn't access many of our company pages due to problems on 3's network, and they said they might be fixed in a few months, but for now I should return it and re-order later...

Now I've gotten age verified, the internet is even more restricted. No more phone porn :D
