Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I will probably go for this, and buy the Sony Ericsson K610i as I mentioned in an earlier post a few pages back. Its a good enough deal at €99 with €100 free credit and a free Casino Royale DVD if bought in Extravison.

    I confirm.

Are you on 3Pay or pay monthly? Also have you ever used it outside Three's Network (Vodafone)? My plan is to get the Three phone and use the data bundle add-on as a replacement for Dial-up on Vodafone GPRS network as there is no Three coverage where I live.

My plan is to get the phone and 083 number and use it away for a month and if everything goes well I will then port my Meteor Number to Three and use Three for mobile Voice and Data... I don't want to port over immediately incase I'd have to return it to the place where I'd buy it, Do Three allow this delayed porting or must I port upon joining?

Does the Sony Ericsson K610i have a USB port and behave when used as a modem?

What are ping times like on the 3g network?

I am on 3Pay -in the shape of the Mobile Broadband 3000 tariff with datacard. There is no charge when using national roaming on Vodafone. That is why you are allowed to use it -you cannot stray onto any other national networks.

Yes and yes although I use it as a bluetooth modem. In my experience, SE models perform much better as modems than Nokias.

glad to discover that the "Mobile Vox" sisx app works on my N73! Just thought I'd mention it as another non "services" web based app that works through 3's apn. very handy for mobile blogging or uploading images, vid clips etc to your vox blog..

I should have put the word "Standard" before USB, I've yet to buy a phone that comes packed with their non-standard impossible to buy USB cables.

As far as I know the k608i uses a mini USB but I think the k610i uses a USB specific to SE phones.

Are we sure about this? I have still seen no facility for add-ons on pre-pay, including the latest magazine. I hope that I'm utterly wrong.

yep, rang 3 to confirm et all!

    I'm watching this closely too!
Can you really buy a phone for €99 with €100 euro credit
and spend it all on data packages?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,611 ✭✭✭✭Sam Vimes

No, the 100 credit is spread out over 8 months or so and you have to top up by 10 a month to get the free 10

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,213 ✭✭✭culabula

And would the money spent on a broadband add-on suffice to generate the free 10 euro per month?

yes, if it was the 10 euro add on. the 100 for e6 wouldn't be enough

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,745 ✭✭✭niallb

I was thinking more in terms of the 19.99 add-on :-)
Haven't seen proof of how it works yet, but surely
you'd make sure you're €20 in credit, and then choose the add-on.

If you get €10 a month credit, then €10 topup might just get you that add-on for the first few months.

A Three phone appeals to me as well for the portability of the data plan,
and the home call rates in Austria and Italy.

for the 2nd time in as many months my data card bill is gone cuckoo,

checked the current spend today and its 1,900e.......:D

it was 2e all week so no idea how they get these figures, i got over 500,000kb left this month so was keeping an eye on that.
    seems their billing is screwed

I still get that failure even after getting age verified. You have to click on one of their preapproved sites and then it allows you to purchase the add on. I had it with no problems for a week but then it did ask for age verification.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, I'm thinking of switching to 3 for their data options and l was wondering if someone could confirm for me what is supported? From what I've learned so far, 3pay does not support https or apps like opera mini, will 3billpay support opera mini?

I was voda billpay for ages and got sick of my data add on being screwed up and overcharging taking months to resolve so l ported to meteor payg as a stop gap measure so if 3billpay supports opera mini etc. then it would be a good option for me.

Also, if l were to switch, I'm assuming that there would be no problem in setting up the sim in an unlocked N70 from vodafone? Thanks!

All I can tell you is that the 3 billpay (postpay) broadband SIM that I am using supports all of these features and works in any unlocked 3G mobile. I cannot speak about the BB add-on which seems to cause problems for some users/features/apps.

The only real "problem" I have had was SMTP setup which does not work -but is easily bypassed by using the gMail app instead.

opera mini does work on 3 and if you can get the 3 settings working on it, the n70 will work fine too. you can get the settings sent to the phone on the nokia website

Thanks for the quick replies guys! Commander Vimes - that's opera mini on billpay with the BB addon or on both bill and prepay? One final question, do 3 still allow half of your inclusive minutes to be used to the UK like they did when they started? I can't find any mention on the website. I think I'll port to them, provided I'm not asked for a whopping deposit

24 pages in and we still don't seem to have that clear a picture of what you get :-)

@Culabula, could you describe your problem with SMTP a bit more?
In your experience, does SMTP not work, or are your settings maybe
trying to use an SMTP server that is not on Three's network?
You may just be being denied access for that reason.

From my point of view, switching to gmail wouldn't be bypassing the problem. The smtp access problem would still remain.

Opera mini is confirmed working on BillPay.
Is it actually confirmed not to work on prepay?
Mobile Vox, and Fring reportedly work too,
    but not clear on prepay.

I'd love to get my hands on a billpay data sim and a prepay+BB
sim for an hour, and do a genuine feature by feature test.

I have a Voda 3G card, and it's a genuine internet connection with none
of this catch 22 situation going on. You can run anything across it.
Surely that can be available on Three too?!

The only smtp that appears to work is: smtp.three.ie -this has been reported on elsewhere. Unfortunately, that does not suit me.

Using the gMail dedicated app, send and receive works perfectly *even though* using the gMail SMTP elsewhere fails. This solution is adequate for my purposes.

The Three dataSIM is by and large full internet access: when I had the expensive and 'useless-outside-the-ROI-unless-you-are-extremely-wealthy' Vodafone modem and SIM the same SMTP problems abounded -unless you were using mail.vodafone.ie and/or gMail or .Mac.

For me, the Vodafone offer is cheaper than 3, because I travel to countries where 3 does not have a network, including Portugal, Germany, France and Spain. With 3, I'd either have to pay several euros per megabyte, or not get any access at all. With Vodafone, I pay €90 "unlimited roaming" to get unlimited data roaming for a month. The only country I travel to that does have a 3 network in Austria, and there I'd be outside of their 3G coverage area.

Is it a good deal? Not really. Is it the best deal around? Unfortunately for me, yes.

All depends on your usage pattern.

That's OK then - that's how SMTP is supposed to work.
The reason the gmail app works is because it's not using smtp from your modem.

No network should permit smtp access from users not directly connected to it.
That's where spam comes from :-)

There should be no problem with you using the smtp.three.ie address in your mail program,
no matter what your email address is, so long as it is real.
It only affects sending mail, and has no bearing on receiving it.

And that's 90€ *on top* of the 39/49€ you're already paying, n'est-ce pas?

    It's madness.

My gripe with Voodoo is the unresolved 1400€ bill for using it 6 times in the north in December (where they told me it worked FOC), the amount in question plus the alleged data consumed (no downloads as such involved).
    Chancers.

niallb, I think you're talking about the fact that it is a good idea for ISP's to block port 25? Stateside, I know a lot of ISP's do this to stop spam. Basically, it will prevent any PC turned into a spam zombie from spamming on port 25 by connecting directly to SMTP servers to deliver mail. With the number of Windows "zombie computers" out there, I agree that this is generally a very good idea.

However, Gmail's SMTP should still work, since it runs on a custom port, uses SSL encryption and authorisation. If it's blocked even though he configured it correctly, it's a network fault on 3's end that they need to fix ASAP.

The problem is that being a dirty nordy, I am not allowed to have a 3 Ireland account (despite holding Voda, o2 and Meteor accounts for many years) and had to acquire my datacard by underhand means (there is no equiavlent deal in the north).

Consequently, smtp.three.ie announces me as a girl. It's bad enough carrying the stigma of a nordy without being exposed as a transvestite into the bargain ;-)
