I am now the proud owner of a Sweet Sweet Brno/CZ 452
Varmint chambered in .17HMR. Just got home about an hour
ago after traveling to collect it.

I have yet to aquire mounts for my scope which is a 30mm Tube and 56mm Objective so need to get some high mounts (soon if I can)
Lovely Lovely Rifle, Very Short Looking. The Barrell is fully floated and nice
an meaty looking. It does not appear to be leaning to one side
which is great as I can slide thin card all the way down.
Rubber butt plate is nice and makes it very comfortable
to hold. The Reciever has a Matt finish to it which I like. The Stock
is neet looking Glad I got a wooden one and not a model with the plastic now

unfortunately I damaged the stock a tiny tiny bit within the first few
minutes of me getting it home which kinda put a dampner on things
I had the bolt open and out of Curiosity
I decided to turn the bolt (as if to close it) while still in the open position
just to see if it would actually turn in that direction......and it did but in the process it took a small chip out of the stock behind the bolt as it rotated.
(I wont be doing that in a hurry again) Maybe something to add on
    stupid things newbies do.

The Stock itself Walnut appears to be VERY delicate.
Must look into the correct thing to do if the stock takes a bang or chip
in the future. Do you live with the chip it or try fill with a synthetic wood fill.

One worrying thing is the Magazine. The release catch works but it takes
considerable force to pull the mag out. Also when inserting the mag I gotta
give it a slap before it engages and stays home. When loading 5 rounds into
the magazine it is very stiff and It made me a little bit uncomfortable
putting the pressure on the rounds while loading it. I most try find a way
of freeing up both a little bit. The Action is a little stiff but I am told
thats normal with brand new out of the box.

I got a box of 17g and a box of 20g. I heard the 17g are more accurate
    dunno how true that it.

Will post a pic once I am all set up and have put a few rounds through
    the barrell.

    Congrats man :) .

Don't forget to give it a really good clean before putting any rounds through it, usually loads of gunk in the barrell from the factory (rust preventitive, cosmoline or such I believe). It wouldn't do it any good glazing that onto the barrell.

With a new barrell, I usually:

    clean really well
    shoot a few,
    clean really well again,
    shoot another few,
    quick clean,
    shoot a good few,
    quick clean..................good to go :D .

It certainly doesn't do any harm.

Give us a shout if you ever want to meet up & compare HMRs :D .

    cheers.

I'm still trying to work out just what kind of rail thats on it.
Seeing some web sites say 11mm Dovetail for the Varmint if chambered
for the .22LR BUT....there are sites that state if its chambered for .17hmr
then its 3/8" Dovetail. So I am not quite sure dunno why they could
not be the same. As its a BRNO it would not
be made for the US market so Maybe its is 11mm after all Mmmmmm

Once I get some practice in and begain to gain some consistancy and confidence
I may start asking about the place to see it would be possible in the distant future
to maybe try organize some sort of friendly match/compitition with hmr owners.

Well done Bullets and many happy safe days.
I always thought that the American was the only one with a 3/8" dovetail but I just found this
    on the CZ American site.

    http://www.cz-usa.com

"CZ 452 Varmint is a heavy barrel version of the American, featuring a 21" heavy barrel and is made without open sights, but with dovetail groove. Varmint in .22 LR features 11mm dovetail while .17 HMR FEATURES 3/8" DOVETAIL.
The stock is Turkish walnut and has a heavier forend to allow for the barrel."

Yeah I had read that and it made me wonder if the CZ's Varmint with American stock that are manufactured for customers in the USA were slightly different to the ones that were made for people in Europe or would they be the same worldwide.

I may try buying SportsMatch Reach Forward Mounts 30mm High 9-11mm Dovetail 30mm High Up to 56mm Lens.

Cant mount the scope yet so have not posted pics.
The Bull Barrell cannot truely be apreciated until you see it in real life.
I dont like the crown/muzzle though.

I got 1 inch 30mm rings at lunch time today they were loose and I dont
know what brand they were and the gun store bloke did not know either!!
but wanted 80 Euros for them. one of the rings had a lug or piece of
metal which suggested a rail would need to be drilled and would not
fit the rail. Also it appeared if I was to mount the scope using these rings
if they did fit then when I opened the bolt the bolt handle would touch the scope.
I returned the rings so will have to order online or get more info off of peeps.

The First pic is what I called Newbie damage where I turned the bolt
while open and managed to take a small chunk of wood from the stock:

That piece of metal sticking down on the mounts usually has a correspponding notch on some rifles. My tikka has one for example.

Nice rifle, its a pitty about the stock damage, its obviously a lesson well learned. I wonder is there any materials you could fill it with and then color it?

    anyone have any ideas??

Get a fresh brazil nut and rub the juice on the damage,it wont fill it but will hide it very nicely. This also works for scratches in wooden furniture.

Thanks, All going well will get my first few shots out of it Sunday.
I know from visiting midlands I sometimes come across a few HMR shells
so I know at least one person regularly shoot there at the 50m range.

As for meeting up would like that in the future. I reckon it would be a good
idea sometime if a few owners of .17 could organise a friendly competition
so were not left out in the cold so to speak.
(I wouldnt be ready for that yet have to get good and experianced first :-) )
I also dont/cant drive so only make it to the range when my friend has free time and can drive up. (Hopefully that will change too as my girlfriend is just after buying an old banger of a car for 300Euro! Neither of us know how to drive so getting to the range is an incentive for me to start to learn!)

I shot a marlin 17hmr in midlands a few times last year, the 17 gr hornadays were fantastic.
don,t worry too much about the chip in stock ,just to make u feel better about it I was lamping fri night and ended up sliding down a drain with my tikka 223 under me so I,ve got scars on stock and scope now,oh well.
hope all your groups are half inch

    Hi all,
I was looking at buying an Anschutz Model 1717 D.
Where do you guys shoot? (Other than midlands...it's too far for me) Is there anywhere you can zero your scope and just practice, in the Dublin area and surrounds without getting into trouble?

I normall shoot Clay's and would like to get into Rifle shooting again. Haven't fired since my FCA days.
    Thanks in advance

Met a guy at the range Sunday who let me fire a few rounds
out of his Anschutz (Dunno what model did not check)
It was fantastic. The Trigger was a factory trigger and
it broke like glass. You Put a little pressure on the trigger
you dont feel it move at all, the rifle fires and there is no over travel
    or anything.

Same as my HMR then :D .

The CZ's trigger can easily be "tweaked" by sleeving one of the pins. Many use a "Brook's kit" but he's not very reliable by all accounts. I fabricate my own sleeves & the trigger is now, second to none, apart from a little over-travel which I'm not bothered about.

We must meet up some day........

I just ordered a few bits and pieces from him yesterday,
A bore Guide for a .22 and .17 (Handy to have) the trigger kit
and those putty like rests to aid holding the trigger while knocking
out the pin to insert the tube. Also got those fancy screw replacements
that look nice for no good reason at all other than they looked nicer.
