Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Man United v Europe XI
    Uefa Celebration Match
Date: Tuesday 13 March, 2007 GMT
    Venue: Old Trafford
Coverage: Live on BBC Three from 1930 GMT with live streaming on the BBC Sport website. (UK users only)

Coach Marcello Lippi has AC Milan quartet Paolo Maldini, Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo and Ronaldo for Tuesday's match against Manchester United.
Liverpool's Steven Gerrard is in the squad as is striker Ronaldinho and keepers Iker Casillas and Oliver Kahn.
Henrik Larsson is in the Europe squad, days after his loan spell at United came to an end.
The match marks the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome and United's 50 years in European competitions.

    Full Europe XI squad:
Goalkeepers: Oliver Kahn, Grégory Coupet, Iker Casillas.
Defenders: Paolo Maldini, Jamie Carragher, Eric Abidal, Lilan Thuram, Carles Puyol, Marco Materazzi, Fabio Grosso.
Midfielders: Gianluca Zambrotta, Steven Gerrard, Juninho Pernambucano, Florent Malouda, Luis Miguel, Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo. Strikers: Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Alessandro Mancini, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrik Larsson.

Should be an interesting game to watch. So what would your team Europe XI (with a little help from Brazil!) be?

    Mine is:

    Coupet

    ----Puyol--Materazzi--Maldini----

    Gattuso--Pirlo

    --Gerrard--Juninho--Ronaldinho--

    ----Ibrahimovic----Larsson

I'm sure Fergie is delighted that this match was scheduled at this time of the season! Would be more interested to see the Utd lineup - wonder will start with a full strength side and then make a raft of changes at the break? Would love to see King Eric make a 10-min appearance!!

A number of casualties on Lippi's team....Ronaldhino is out for one......replacements? Fowler and Zenden!!!

Should give the United faithful something to keep them amused.

I expect Robbie's five star salute to go down well with the Stretford End again.

    good shout! :)

Fowler and Zenden as replacements - the proverbial scraping of the barrel! It will indeed be interesting to see what kind of line-up Manyoo put out although the official site reads: Lippi's squad looks an imposing proposition for Sir Alex Ferguson, who has said he will put out his strongest available side!

Usually in these games the defenders take it pretty easy and allow plenty of movement and attacking to make the game more entertaining for the spectator.

Praying Cara plays - couldn't see him letting Ronaldo drift past him without getting in a crunching tackle!

Lilan Thuram, Carles Puyol, Marco Materazzi,Paolo Maldini,

`Mancini Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo. : Ronaldinho

Considering there really is nothing at stake here I'm surprised it is getting so much coverage. I'm sure both teams will be told to relax on the crunching tackles and not to overextend themselves in any way.

    My prediction:

A drab and tepid 90 minutes, devoid of any form of entertainment. What a terrible time to schedule a match of no importance. That said, there are some class players there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

No no, it's gona be a fun game, with no tackling, so therefore totally favouring the attacking team, my prediction, 7-4 to United.

Think Im gonna watch Sunderland instead. Havent seen Roys boys for a while and they are on a great run at the moment.

Whats the point in sticking matches like these in at this stage of the season? Surely they'd bebetter used as a pre-season game. Maybe on the same weekend as the Charity shield or in the week before or after.

Having said that, it's always good to see these games. Not so good if players pick up injuries.

Does anyone know if anywhere in town will be showing this ?

ah nice one, I completely forgot about that after seeing the ad the other day, I'm surprised they haven't been on tv more.

What was the european starting 11? Only switched in time to see the subs.

Really obvious already that no one wants to risk any sort of injury. A few alls just going a yard too far and players not even attempting to stretch for them. Undersdatndable enough I spose.

Hope Canizares makes a better effort than that if hes got a 1 on 1 against Chelsea.:D

2-0 Utd. The caramel assasin sneaks in at the back post.:)

It's a pity Sunderland are playing tonight, wonder would Roy have got a game?
Would have been great craic if Utd had Xidane as a special guest.:)

Lawrenson with a great bit of trivia. "If you notice in the Champions league last week, every team that scored an away goal went through" . Missed the Liverpool - Barce game, eh Mark?:)

Trevor Steven won't be let back into an RTE studio after calling Ronaldo "the most entertaining player around" :D

Ibrahimovic crashes ball against bar from penalty spot.

3-1 for the mancs at the mo.

    Who got the goals?

Rooney (2), Browne and Ronaldo for United.

    Malouda for EuroStars.

    4-1 Now.

    Not a Liverpool player anymore!

I expected a couple of boo's but seeing as its a charity game I didnt expect it to happen everytime they got on the ball... pretty shameful.

ANyone think these are possibly the worst commentators ever? Do they even know who is on the pitch, and if they do, they've no idea what they look like

If you are talking about the RTE2 commentary, I agree. Awful, constantly getting player names wrong. Sounds like they dragged some random farmer off the street to do it.

I watched a bit of the first half on RTE , when the peno hit the bar he went on for about 5 mins about the bar still rattling " the bar at the stretford end is still rattling, in old trafford, the bar is still rattling. after that penalty that hit the bar just there the bar is still rattling" :)

Jimmy "the sports encyclopaedia" Me Gee shouldn't be allowed to commentate on football matches. He really is terrible. Although I laughed in the first half when the mobile phone rang and he said, "It's Ronaldo"

Yeah but its more of the "lets laugh at what the senile old fool comes out with next" variety of comedy as opposed to "what a genius stand up he is" :D
