I saw this on another forum and thought it would be good here.

I realise it can't be definitive of posters political views but it's a bit of fun. For the record I scored Economic Left/Right: -4.88 and Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -2.87 which leaves me somewhere close to Gandhi.

What about the rest of you?

I did this again for fun to see if I've changed much since the last time it was done on boards. I've moved from Gandhi to being very close to the Dalai Lama.

    Economic Left/Right: -5.13
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.44

It's interesting to look at the charts and that the people of peace (Gandhi, Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela) are in the bottom left corner and that those involved in the current war in Iraq are in the opposite corner. For me that says a lot of where we should all be aiming to be politically in order to have peace. My opinion, I'm sure there's plenty of other views on it.

    :)

It's interesting to look at the charts and that the people of peace (... Nelson Mandela)

Nelson Mandela who set up an armed guerilla organisation which engaged in numerous bombings and shootings? I wouldn't put him in the same bracket as the Dalai Lama or Gandhi.

Well you obviously know a lot more about him than I do, apologies.

I remember doing this a few years back. However, this time around I stopped after the first question:

"If economic globalisation is inevitable, it should primarily serve humanity rather than the interests of trans-national corporations"

C'mon! Thats just pure question begging!! This question implies that these interests are mutually incompatible - just look at Walmart and all those wonderful wonderful products at low low prices!!

Ok I lied, I just had to complete it - I got: Economic Left/Right: -3.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.08 - god damn it, I'm still a pinko even though I havn't purposely bought the Guardian in months. Those questions are worded to easily pigeonhole people into one of the four quadrants.

Right, I'm going to read the daily mail for a year and then retake that test

I wasn't trying to be a smartarse, don't get me wrong, it just seems that many people these days are trying to portray the ANC as some sort of Gandhi-esque movement when they were far from.

The political compass doesn't really say anything about one's attitude towards violence, it does however have a lot to say about the reasons for any violence and what form it will take.

Fighting for freedom and fighting for power are on two opposite sides of the scale.

    My results are something like
    economic -10, social -8

    Economic Left/Right: -1.50
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.03

Never studied Economics so some of the questions didn't quite connect. Some of the questions are hilariously leading as well.

Hmmm,Those questions are worded in black or white.
I'd have chosen a few different answers if Grey was also an option so I'm not too sure how usefull this "study" is.
    That said...
I seem to be different to the rest of ye ;)

    Economic Left/Right: 0.88
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.38

Its better than nothing and the only one out there.

There are plenty of scientific multiple choice question-type surveys that deliberately force a people to choose between black or white when they know they want to choose grey*. The trick is to have enough questions and the right questions.

    * Or altenatively have 3 answers when you want 4 or has 4 when you want 5.

    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 2.51

I've scanned through the previous posts and it's seems I'm the only authoritarian here. You poncy liberals:)

Edit: I've just spotted this and it shows what Irish party best represents your views.

It seems I support Sinn Fein.Noooooooooooooooooooo!

According to that chart, practically all of us are too left wing and too anti authoritarian for any of the Irish political parties

I guess that makes me Green. Not entirely surprising.

    i got
    Economic Left/Right: -1.75
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.87

which is just plain silly. some of the question daft. the one about being lucky and the one about art. also how they define the political parties. FF is deffinetley more right-wing than FG.

Somewhere between Socialist and the Greens. Eh, No! :)

I have done it twice with pretty much the same result. Both times I was down between the Greens and the Socialists. Which is a load of toss.

That's where I would be if I didn't think people were greedy and inherently competitive. Hence why realistically I am up closer to the PDs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 686 ✭✭✭kittex

    I found it really interesting.

I was placed quite firmly on the Libertarian Left, a point away from Nelson Mandela.
I have never thought of labelling myself in any category and didn't really think I was so far left. I guess I have strong views on Globalisation and multi-nationals, so that send me over that direction.

So according to them I should vote Socialist, but I wouldn't... I might vote Green but (I am currently in the UK) they also have some policies I do not agree with, so didn't vote for them.
I'm in Scotland and voted SNP and Lib Dems last month.

Seems odd that ideals and parties are separating, if that makes sense.

I would swap the positions of the Greens and Labour. You don't see any Green politicians saying "we are socialists" like you see the Labour lads doing.

Oh yeah, I think my score on this tends to be about

    economic -4
    social -1

I think that put me close to Gandhi, if I understand the graph right.
