Is the Poker forum too big for boards?

Not really a request for another section, more of one querying other peoples thoughts/feelings on whether another should be moved.

More of a (probably ignorant) rambling this, and probably not in the right section either. Out of the last few "new posts" I have checked, most of them are for the poker section.

Now, I like a game of poker every so often, nothing against it whatsoever. But these threads that are raised are often full of pokery jargon that I cba (see I can do it too) to understand thus, these threads may as well be in Chinese or something as I do not understand them.

I can't actually imagine one of these threads being discussed IRL (another one there) with the people actually keeping a straight face and not bursting out laughing at the jargon used. I have included an example below:

    Quote:

    "I've 9k, villain 16+k

    blinds 75/150

he limps utg+1, not 100% whether he open limped or not.

I make it 500 to go with AdQh in mp.

    He's the only caller.

    Flop:

    7d5c4d

    He checks, I bet 700.

    He c/r to 5k.
    "

Wtf? I would have a better chance understanding hyroglyphics or something.

Those of you who can actually understand these threads are probably about to hop on your keyboards and go for a right auld dance, fair enough knock yourself out. I just think that the poker section has overgrown boards and should be hosted elsewhere or like not appear in the new posts section or something lol.

Doesn't seem any more technical than some of stuff that goes in net & comms, satellite or mustard in its own way...

ps. looks like a clear fold to me

Moved from forums to feedback - (not a forum request).

    and to answer your question
Is the Poker forum too big for boards?

No. its only the 5th most posted forum.

    and in response to
I just think that the poker section has overgrown boards and should be hosted elsewhere or like not appear in the new posts section or something lol

You appear to be asking for the ability to stop posts from forums you have no interest in from being displayed in the latest 20 posts?

This could be a useful user option. No doubt we will consider this at a future point, but for the moment you must suffer our poker playing friends posts, unless of couse you just decide not to follow a link to the poker forum, I suggest not clicking on poker related threads for the moment:)

Every hobby has its jargon. I wouldn't worry about it too much, it doesn't take much time to pick it up if you want.

Eh... you don't want the poker forum's posts appearing on the front page because you don't understand the jargon, so if you understood the jargon you would be cool with it? Jaysus. Then why don't you learn the jargon if that's the only problem?

I've tried going into the poker forum sometimes and I can't understand the txtspk type jargon myself which was unfortunate, but I didn't correct the problem by asking users there what it all meant. I was going to put up a thread asking for a dictionary from users as to what all the jargon means (I didn't because I'm not interested enough in poker). So, if you want to understand the jargon stick up a thread asking people if they can define some of the phrases, it's that simple.

It's a bit much of you to request that one of the most popular forums on boards be relocated because you don't understand what people are talking about.

However, a solution to this would be an anti-subbed filter on the front page, I don't know if this will be possible with the newest release of vbulletin though. Maybe there exists a way of ignoring certain forums from the front page by putting a forum on your ignore list.

You can filter the categories on the main page by selecting your preferred category using the menu bar on the right. Granted, because Poker is now in two categories (games and rec) you may be out of luck if they are the two categories that you frequent the most.

Also, iirc, Boards has RSS enabled so you can subscribe to the RSS feed of certain forums (although coming to think of it, I haven't noticed the RSS icon in a while)

You pick it up as you progress. I used the above links a few times. It can be mysterious at first. But no more so than some other forums.

Like that time when I had a router problem I was advised to do a "cool boot". So me with screw driver in hand googled away until I sussed I was being advised to "power off/on"

    Of for the simple life....

Not only should you nearly let the timer run out, you should ask for the time bank. :)

No, I don't think it is too big.
    Check raise? that guy sucks.

every specialist forum will have its jargon,
    for example http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=159827
not exeryone is going to understand (or care) what everyting in there means.
if you want to be a part of it, you will have to learn it,
if you dont want to be part, then what difference does it make.

There are many forums that are busier and have more posts than poker. It could be argued that the forums growth can be attributed to the fact that people who find boards.ie for something other than poker are drawn to it and those go to boards purely to read the poker forum go on to post in other forums.

In other words boards feeds poker and poker feeds boards. Maybe it should be moved to a different section of boards but I very doubt that would change anything.

Honestly, the only time I ever hear anything about the Poker forum is in threads like this. It certainly doesn't get in my way.

Try subscribing to the forums you like, and set up 'auto-subscribe' to threads in your CP, then use subbed.php instead of the frontpage. Works a charm.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

Back before the current front page was the front page there used to be a Subbed only feature for the front page, from what I remember anyway.

"or something lol" kinda sums up your suggestion.

Pretty standard way to describe the hand.

Can the OP please explain which topics he has a good working knowledge of, so that we know how to better enact the proposed policy of making it all about them?

More of a (probably ignorant) rambling this,

    You said it!

You want to get rid of something because you don't understand it?

    What an idiot. Pathetic.
