Are these worth buying over stock coolers?

Im getting a 6600 Core 2 duo and would like to try some overclocking now ive read you can overclock a bit with the stock cooler!?

Im just curious about it all!

This is going to be my 1st system build and id like to have a pretty good one all the nice stuff added! e.g the coolers and fan controls etc etc...

This is nothing to do with the cooler question but more to do with your overclocking and learning how.. This is nice starting point; Begining Over Clocking

www.anandtech.com have a useful comparison of coolers. See the last one for the "thermalright ultra-120 plus" or something. Arctic FreezerPro 7 is outstanding value @ €25, had my e6700 at 3.6Ghz. Scythe Infinity or the above thermalright are excellent and will take a Core2Duo to 3.9 :)

You'll need a good motherboard too, though there are plenty out now that would bring that 6600 to 3.6 if the processor would take it (it almost certainly wont :)).

The tuniq tower is a fantastic cooler if you can get your hands on one. I have a scythe ninja and it is great too. All of the top end coolers now are very tall, so your case needs to be able to take them (with the possible exception of the 7700 from zalman, which is comparatively flat (and heavy), but good, but not amazing).

In answer to "are they worth buying", the answer is yes. You'll be able to clock your CPU far past what it would have cost you to buy the next most expensive one for far less money.

Or would I just be better off buying a water cooling kit...? Which I plan to do.. Im not jumping the gun or anything buts its always interested me water cooling your PC!

I reckon I could do it like!

Stick with a good stock air cooler for now like Zalman or Scythe water cooling is not something to jump straight in on as it requires planning.

There are good off the shelf kits you can now buy that simply the process a bit more but it will cost a lot more than just a good air cooler.

Do the coolers come with thermal paste or will I have to buy some?

They come with thermal paste which is usually crap. I'd recommend getting some arctic silver. It's well worth the extra few euro tbh.
