Job Interviews

Just wondering if anybody has had any bad reactions at job interviews because of piercings?

I have one coming up and if I get the job I'll more than likely be dealing with customers. I'm thinking I'd be better off removing my lip ring beforehand but it's so much trouble cause I can't take it out myself, and then if I want to put back in again that means another trip back to the piercing studio. :o

What are people's views on this?

Just take it out, if it's a ball and ring then it just takes practice for getting the ball back on, it's not really that hard.
In the eyes of an employer you'll look more presentable without the jewellery.
It depends on your priority, what's more important, having a job, or the inconvinience of taking a piercing out for a couple of hours.

what type of work do you do Sarannewrap may i ask? just curious, i was doing a lil internship and had to remove my labret even though i was working on a computer and not in contact with anyone

Take it out. You're going to be representing the company, and unless it's Miss Whiplash, Inc, it's unlikely a lip ring is included in their desired image.

I've never had a problem with my piercings and employment, but maybe I'm lucky? I've worked with food, on shop floors, as cashiers, as a saleperson. You name it, I've done it basically! No job has ever commented on my piercings or asked me to remove them. I think you'll be grand once you aren't carrying around your bodyweight in piercings.

I have an interview myself on Tuesday.
And I've got ink on both hands.
    Oh dear.
The face metal is ok. That can just come off.
I was thinking of gloves or something?
    I need this job!
It'll be working with Three, the phone company.

I had an interview with them as a salesperson. I took out all my facial piercings just to be careful, they seem like quite professional people. I hear that makeup for covering scarring is the way to go?

You can never be too careful! My first job was at a record store and I thought I'd be safe. I got the job after doing an interview with all my piercings in, only to be made take them out when I was in the actual shop!

    I will do.
But cos it's with a like 'respectable' company, I reckon I don't have a hope.

    Anyways. I had the interview.

I took out the metal in my face and did the best job I could of covering the ink on my hands.

    The guy was really cool.

But he asked me did I ever have to make a presentation about anything. I happened to mention my one I did on body modification. He seemed interested.
I think he may of spotted the ink on my right hand tho.

    Oh well.

So. Anyone wanna give me a job! :p

Aye, but it'd look a bit rude if you didn't take them off to shake hands or during the interview.

Most places have a dress code, especially the more professional places, so even if you take out the piercings for the interview, if you get the job you may not be able to wear them in work. The question there is whats more important to you? I know I would never consider taking out my piercings for a job, but then again, I have a fairly decent office job that don't have a problem with my metal. Will more than likely be changing jobs next year as we are moving, and I'll go to all interviews with my piercings in and if they dont like it then thats tough. I accept that it will be much harder to find a job that allows them, but it is getting easier these days, and a lot of companies like to think of themselves as "cool" and "hip" and this is an advantage for us pierced and inked! :D

I've taken out my tongue and ear piercing when I've done interviews..
The tongue might sound extreme to take out but trust me.. its worth taking it out for 1 hour for an interview.

Now when I got the job I use it.. my manager saw it 6 months later.. but then hew knew me better than to "judge" me over my piercing. He actually said "Glad you didnt have that during the interview!" with a smile on him.

Its sad but the truth that we get judged by piercings and tattoos... It totally sucks.. But I knew that when I took the dive into the nice world of piercings and tattoos.. I have avoided to do any tattoos or piercings on my face and hands. Hardest part to cover up, but it can be done.

Good luck and it can be done! :D

I'm at my current job for over a year and I only got my face piercings few months ago my boss actually said it was cool he wasn't too impressed when I came in with my lip piercing though cause it had to be a fairly large jewellery to start with. Anyhow I will defo be changing jobs this year and I don't think i'll be taking my piercings out at the interview. If they want me as an employee they'll just have to accept me the way I am.

That's true, I replaced my lip ring with a clear retainer for the interview and now I have a second interview tomorrow so I'm glad that I did. Though I'm not sure which looks worse.. the retainer or just leaving it open but what can ya do?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,095 ✭✭✭Fantasy_Suicide

    Yeah. That's true guys.

Thing is I need a job asap.
I can't really afford to be picky anymore. Grrrr.
    So fingers crossed, everyone!
Beers if I get the job!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,818 ✭✭✭Gauge

That's the problem with jobs... it's easy to say you'll only get one that'll allow you have piercings/tattoos.... until you discover that you have no money to pay for piercings or tattoos! Can't wait to leave mine either.
