Buying a car in the UK

I've just read the 'Importing from the UK - Definitive Guide ' page and it says never buy a car privately in the UK.
Anyone any idea why it says this?
I was thinking of either buying one privately or from a car auction in the UK as it seems to work out a hell of a lot cheaper and I was just curious if anyone here has bought privately and if so, what the various costs incurred where?

    many thanks.

Buying privately gives you less comeback in the event of the car being misrepresented/stolen/clocked etc. That said, i've bought several cars in the UK, all of them privately, and never had a problem. If you do buy privately, though, always have an HPI check done and always have the car looked over by someone you trust.

If you buy the right car privately, you will save even more money.

Buying the wrong one will cost you big.

HPI check, and go through service history (essential) thoroughly, checking key services - such as timing belts - by ringing the garage who carried out the work. Take your time with this.

Get it inspected professionally if you wish.
