    Sorry to hear that dyokes,

Sorry to hear that dvoakes. Just look at how good it will look if you lose the weight though the next time around. You already know you can make it to Stage 3. 1,000's don't ever get that far.

failed the medical today. if your BMI is over 25 at all forget about it. i'm down to 26.8 from 29 but it still wasn't good enough. kick in the nuts though.

    chat tya's

    Thats a bummer alright.

    1. Did they say if you could repeat?
    2. Did they say what your weight needed to be?

From conversations with the Garda recruitment office, they always recommended the weight and for 5-9 it was 13st 3, thats a BMI of 27.

I'd call and ask what you should be, and then say you were told that before and you feel you failed unfairly.

Tough though, Im in the same boat, but have a bit more time to loose the weight. I was relaxed a bit but I'm sh1tting it now.

    thanks everyone.

you can't repeat because of your weight - you get the chance if there is a problem with your eyes or ears.

your BMI has to be under 25 the doc said that in past years they would have let it go but this time around they have decided to be totally strict on it. i thought i was going to be borderline anyway but i was hoping they would tell me to come back in the next draft when they're taking the next group to templemore. i thought that would have been fair seen as if your eyes or ears aren't up to scratch you get a second chance.

cos i'm sitting here thinking now - you can lose weight if you have a hearing problem thats it.

I agree, Dvoakes..I thought the exact same thing when they told me that on the day of the medical. It's a little ridiculous..As a lot of people can lose over a stone in a month. It may be unhealthy..but when there's means..

Hopefully your doctor was quite pleasant..as a few people on the day of my medical were not impressed with how they were treated..even though they passed!

  • Registered Users Posts: 43 Poitiers

Sorry to hear that DVOAKES --- fair play to you though for passing that interview. and remember you have until you are 36 ! to apply again and get through. Chin up boy !

Is anybody else in the same boat ?

Anybody any ideas on how to gat fit fast ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 84 ✭✭Griffen

    Cheers Poitiers

Well done on passing fair play to ya. Ya'll have to start running everynite, prob the best way. So they gave you no notice of when ur medical is, did they say they'll be in contact?

  • Registered Users Posts: 43 Poitiers

It doesn't say on the letter at all. Hope it's not in a week or two. My brother has me on a strict diet and exercise plan. I'm off the fags now since last night --- and do you know what --- doesn't bother me at all. And up to last night I smoked about 20 - 30 a day.

Make sure and post a message when you open you're letter. Best of luck.

this site shows what are bad/good/great times to run 1.5 miles in. I read somewhere on this site that you have 11mins 45secs to do it in Templemore. I am having hassle running a mile in under 7 mins
I'll keep training over the next few weeks and hopefully I'll be able to do that comfortably in 2 weeks for when i start.

CONGRATULATIONS to all those who have got and will get good news today from the PAS. Best of luck with training, medicals and physicals.

QUESTION: I understand that if you fail the eye exam you can repeat the medical cause its treatable. Is a hearing disability treatable?? I don't now??

Also, does anyone know what the story is with curfews and going out in Templemore? All work and no play.......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 627 ✭✭✭mcguiver

Congrats to all who got word...best of luck to those who are still waiting and commiserations to all those who didnt get through... keep us posted on how ye get on.

6 weeks left to my interview, so who knows, might see ye in August fingers crossed!!

I thought they were okay, was fairly stressful trying to get everything perfect though, so I was relieved to have them completed and sent off. How about yourself?

    Hey everyone,

got bad news yesterday, didnt pass my interview. Iam sooo disappointed, cudnt believe it when i opened my letter really thought i passed it. Cryed myself to sleep lastnite still cant believe it.

o well what can u do. gona ring today to get my feedback to see what went wrong so probably wont know that for another few weeks.

Congrats to everyone and good luck to the rest of ye.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 112 ✭✭oceallachain

    Griffen
I am so sorry to hear that you didn't pass the interview. From the sounds of it you seem like a very helpful gal and the force will be all the poorer for not having you a part of it.
There will be other campaigns. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

  • Registered Users Posts: 84 ✭✭Griffen

    Thanks oceallachain,

it was good to chat to all of ye anyways, very helpful along the way.

Id say it will be another 2yrs before the appitude test comes up again, what do ye think??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 500 ✭✭✭hawker

Sorry to hear you didn't get it Griffen. You seem like an intelligent down-to-earth sort to me so I thought you were a shoe in. I hope you learn something from the feedback to get you through next time.

I haven't received anything yet but with my post it doesn't really surprise me. I went home yesterday prepared for the worst and I was rather peeved when there was no post. I'm sure I'm in the same boat as you Griffen.

With regard to when I expect the aptitude to come up again - I think it will be sooner than one might think. Considering that they are already getting set to interview the folks who came in at over 1000 in the aptitude test already I figure that they will be interviewing the people who came over 2000 by the end of the summer. Having said this, I don't see them interviewing people who came over 2500-3000 (I could be wrong of course). So maybe in December they could issue a new campaign???
I actually heard from a very unreliable source (so don't take this to the bank) that there would be another campaign in July. But I'd say late 2005 early 2006 could be a runner.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 627 ✭✭✭mcguiver

Remember guys +gals you can always apply again. I went for it about 10 years ago. Here I am again, but now I've 10 years of experience of dealing with people, a property, decent car, enough savings to enjoy a few years of student garda wages without worrying.

A Garda told me the other day that he started at 24 and he reconed he was too young. He told me about having to tell parents their child had been killed, dealing with judges etc. very daunting for a young garda.

  • Registered Users Posts: 84 ✭✭Griffen

Ya i know, everyone keeps tellin me that. I suppose i am only gone 22 so have another few years left in me! O well maybe next time. The taughts of going through it all again.

Its the fact that u kinda cant plan anything for ages, like if i wanted to go travelling etc i would always be concious of the appitude test or interview coming up. I suppose things could be alot worse.

  • Registered Users Posts: 43 Poitiers

What a balls Griffen ! ---- I know how you feel as I got that letter in 2003. You have until you are 36 though !!!

    Balls !

hey griffen, sorry to hear that. looks like you and me are in the same boat.
at least it means i can head off to america for the summer.
best of luck with whatever you do, and you never know, if i apply again next time we might bump into each other, and like everyone keeps saying, you have until 36, so it's by no means over.

Have to agree Mac there, ye are still young yet,(Griffen and Ralph Lauren) i failed the exam twice and at 24 i said too myself must go with plan b now because i knew i was going to be too old for the next recuitment.. so went on to do a drgee while working (got the drgee) and then came along the Min for Just who increased the age to 35...my second chance, did the exam passed and placed 2000+ id say i be a mature student i templemore.. So you guys its not the end of the world and keep trying...

    Ralph....Wiggum?

    Time for Plan 'Brown'? :D

    Not your ornery onager

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,455 ✭✭✭FGR

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't make it Griffen/Detective. I feel as if it's partially my fault..

It would have been very nice to meet you guys in person, however. I would reckon though that a time could come where that may happen and we may not even know it.

Congratulations, Lilolil. Working for the Public Service must have given us brownie points from the PAS representative!

Hey detective, or should i say ralph

thanks for the support, it was great talking to you, and everyone else for that matter. I hope u have a ball in America, no doubt u will!

Its dissapointing at the moment alrite, you put so much work and effort in for the interview, have to wait nearly six weeks and then be given a four line letter saying sorry u are unsuccessful but sure thats life for ya! sure we have another decade to apply anyways, things could be worse.

Dont forget to send away for your feedback, im dying to see what i went down on.

Jeez, I must be the only person who who was waiting on interview results that hasn't received them yet.

well done to those that have got through so far.
bad luck to those who havent, but keep the chin up. there is still next time.

for those of you going forward, keep posting away.

this has become like a soap opera to me. its facinating stuff :)

and when ye finally become guards, i have a few favours i need! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,423 ✭✭✭tinkerbell

I'm hooked on this thread! Even though I have nothing to do with the subject, a friend of mine went for the aptitude test, so I was reading this, so I could tell her about other people's experiences.

She had her interview on Holy Thursday, and she found out the other day that she passed that. So she now has the next stage to do - I'm assuming that's the medical and fitness test?

Detective - so sorry to hear that you didn't get it. I'd been reading this and knew how much you wanted it. Sure try again next time, and you might get there then. So sorry to everyone else who didn't get it, like others have said here - you have until your thirties to apply, and you may get in then.

Congrats to everyone who did get in, and keep updating so we can all see your progress n stuff :)

    P.S.

And what WWM said - be nice to us when ye are handing out parking tickets and the like :p

Hey Guys=I,like some of ye others, have been following this thread for weeks.....its been more informative than anything else in regard to this competition, for this I thank all who contributed.

Sorry to hear Detective,Griffen etc.. didnt get through but as has already been said there is always next time!!!!!!

Happy Lilolil etc are through to the next phase.

I did my medical on Wed and passed (thank god)..it was nerve wracking.27 blokes in a room, wearing red bathrobes, chewing their nails.
THEY GIVE YOU A MEDICAL HISTORY FORM. ONE FELLA HURT HIS BACK TEN YEARS AGO AND PUT IT DOWN..HE WAS AUTOMATICALLY DEFERRED TILL A SPECIALIST DOES A REPORT ON HIM..IF YOUR SICK ......?????
    The procedure was:
    1. Urine test...those who failed were given a second chance(one poor fella drank lucozade that morning on the way in and failed the urine test coz of the glucose in it...he spent all morning drinking tap water so he could 'perform' again.)I think he passed on the second try.
2.Hearing test..very tough to hear the tones above your own breathing.Concentrate and you'll be fine.
3.A lung capacity test. Give up the aul smokes. One fella failed as his capacity was so bad...he was only around 22-23 and a smoker.Though he looked really worried all morning.
4.Then ye go in to a doctor..touch your toes-he checks you out from head to toe, weighs you again.Checks you for hernia's etc...then the eye test-no one failed this but its tough enough.

    Good luck to ye all
