hey all, will be applying for new licence shortly, havent had one for a few years but held one for ten years, i have a question..... where have all the gunsmiths gone??? there was a time you could choose which gunshop you dealt with but now i find im being pushed toward only one shop in dublin(wont mention it in case i upset someone). What has happened to them? i used to love goin to the likes of garnetts n keegans, and other shops on the quays. i would have thought that shooting being so popular now that there would hane been at least one shop that specialises in guns n ammo in dublin?? any one any info for me?? thanks

where have all the gunsmiths gone? ... What has happened to them?
The economics of the market combined with the rise in internet shopping and the near-traditional lack of a service industry culture in Ireland.

Has been for several years now. See the other threads in the shooting forum for more details.

thanks sparks, you seem to be fairly knowledgeable in here, but i havent seen too many rifles bein sold on irish websites, is there a choice of shops in dublin now? and do theese shops also sell these hand guns,? (never thought id see the day)

No, they're generally sold on EU/US websites and shipped in because the prices are much better than any Irish dealer is offering.

I don't know of any shop selling pistols at the moment (though I haven't been actively looking - anyone else know if there are any?). And since the place on the quays closed down, I've not seen anywhere that really handles firearms in the city (Rory's maybe, but they only do small stuff and more aimed at the wildfowling end of things from what I can tell).

now thats interesting, i wasnt aware you could buy firearms in the us / eu and have them shipped here, how does that work, i was in us recently and inquired about buying a rifle (very cheap and much wider range) and they told me they can not ship rifles overseas? How do i go about it??

There's a thread about it here demon.
BTW, I'm going to split the last few posts out of this thread and into a new one of their own because we've drifted well off the original thread's topic.

There are a couple of new ones southside I'm told, one in Goatstown and one in Monkstown. Anyone elaborate on this? Also there is Tallaght Rod and Gun.

My father was a gunsmith and owned the Rod & Gun in Tallaght, he got out of it because there really wasn't much money in it when he left, although it was quite profitable when he started.

    Re Initial post
I also used to love going into Garrnet & Keegans, a real classy gun/fishing shop. Watts Bros. was the other one on the Quays.

The Original gunsmith that I remember from garnett and Keegans was Tony Curran (definitly tony, nearly sure about Curran). He now runs 'The Gun Gallery' in Drogheda, similar feel to Garnet and Keegans.

In Lucan, there is also a gunshop, on the road from Woodies to the Village. The owner told me that he is also a gunsmith and did his apprenticeship in Garnett and Keegans at same time as Tony Curran.
    Hope this helps
