    Hi all,
I'm getting some refurbishment work done in my money pit, (i.e. house), part of which is replacing some of the existing ceiling light fittings with some downlighters. Having scoured around the net looking for info on what's out there, I'm thinking of using MR16 (3 Watt Luxeon) LED bulbs .. which I came across here

I'd be intested to know if anyone has used them, or a similar type of bulb, and what you thought of them?
Are there any issues with heat build up around the bulb, as you might get with the standard 20/35w reflector lamps?
I'd be interested to know if its possible to fit them into an en-suite bathroom ceiling, I'm not sure if specialist fittings are required, e.g IP44/65 rated fittings?

Any feedback would be gratefully appreciated.
    PaulD

Howdy - We just started a similar discussion on this thread - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055066405 - you might be interested in following.

I have been looking at these recently and can give you some specifics.
Very few are IP rated and you have to check the details to discover whether they are or not. In terms of whether IP rating is required or not, you can take guidance from the revised UK specs as per this link:
    http://www.diydata.com/electrics/bathroom_electrics/bathroom_electrics.php
    That should help.

In terms of heat - they do run warm and do need ventilation, but the power to heat factor with LED's is much more efficient than bulbs - so expect approx 10% of the equivalent from a bulb - i.e. a 50w bulb outputs ~50w of heat, while an LED system based on the equivalent light output will emit ~5w of heat.

A 3w LED bulb will use 1kw in 333 hours, while a 50w bulb will use 1kw in only 20 hours.
Look at it this way - the payback period with these bulbs is a fairly long time, but it's worth it in the end.
