arctictree, no doubt you have seen lying snow in march before - have you ever seen it last for more than a day?

    Feb 27/28 2001 - Snow lasted for a week - until Sunday 4th March

March 23rd 2004 - Snow lasted for only 1 day. Strong sun the next day cleared it.

Every event is different - it all depends on the weather after the snowfall. A return to the mild stuff can clear it in a couple of hours. In March, strong sunshine can do the same thing.

That 36 hour FAX chart Weathercheck posted is the chart of the day for myself. The last time I saw any sort of LP position centre itself in that spot was February 2001. Nothing more to do now except wait for the beast to strike. Does anyone have some good links of visible satellite images of europe, beyond the UK and Irl MetOs?

Almost realtime (about an hour behind) images that you can animate with some very handy controls. Also shows air temps in false colour. Had this site opened since I first got linked to it on here (sessionsaver in FF)

:) Quite a promising forecast from evelyn cusack after the nine news this evening, she said snow showers for tomorrow night and monday and didn't mention any crappy "wintry showers"(ie sleet) like they usually do in every cold snap which is certainly a good sign. Scroll to bottom of page on the following link to see it:

Tomorrow night is far from certain and now we are beginning to see the warmer air I was mentioning earlier taking effect on the dew points and precip - type charts and making things a bit too marginal really:

Does anyone know if there could be squall lines tonight because about 15mins ago i got some very strong gusts and then lashing rain, im in meath btw

No fear of the showers reaching right down throughout the country in this wind. Now for temps to be low it could be interesting.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 8,632 ✭✭✭darkman2

Yes temperatures starting to plummet down 4 or 5C across much of the country in the last 2 hours.

Someone in the rain or shine thread is reporting sleet already and a gale in sligo. i must say i didn't expect it to be so windy tonight, temp is dropping like a stone here, 4.5*c here now

    That would have been me.

The sleet/hail came through with the last shower about half an hour ago.
It's dry at the moment, but fierce windy.

    night, night ...

There wont be much in it DM,very little room for a warm sector in this flow. The west might have sleety stuff but that be on the windward coasts.Inland should still have something more wintry like snow and defo over high ground where it will settle. As for the east should deliver some snow in shower variety both day and night with sufficient cooling lowering DP in downdrafts.I dont see the snow sticking here and as PL formation well knocked on the head.Only a disturbance peping up the showers with no frontal activity.Me thinks its a hit and miss scenario now.

Speaking of downdrafts had a 46mph gust in a shower.

Just watched the beeb forcast. Had a practical white out for Ireland tomorrow. Expect heavy and prolonged snow showers pretty much from the word go.

First dibs on the snow report:p

We have lying snow on the grass right now. A couple of small snowflakes drifting in the wind too. Most of the ground is just very wet but the bit of snow on the grass is still fecking brilliant!!!!:D

It's gone mental here. The fastest rate of snow I've ever witnessed. The snow is sticking everywhere, including westward windows. The gusts have turned it into a blizzard.

It's snowing heavily again after a 10 minute break, not quite so ferociously as at 8 o clock. Most of the grass has a 1 cm covering.

Edit: strike that "not so ferociously" part:D

Just had a snow shower here. Extremely windy too. Temp down to 1.7c in the shower.

Could be quite a snowy afternoon as these showers continue to build east but unlikely to have overnight stuff unless its frontal :(

Might take the car out for a spin later, assume Djouce and friends have a covering by now.

No pictures in this thread please think of those on dial-up
Edit, oops sorry, I see snowbie has already posted a warning :(

I do have a legitimate reason to post here though!!

Temp 5C, dewpoint 1C, but have just have a brief flurry!

Admitably more like snow grains than flakes, but white swirling round in the wind non the less.

It sure is busy keeping on top of things, what with the rugby, cricket and snow....

More on the way Mothman, started up here again so should be over your direction in a few minutes.

I see it coming though it appears to be passing south of me. Also problem is they are moving so quickly and I think the mountains are really sucking the life out of them for me. Even with the brief flurry, the sun never stopped shining!

Just had my first snow shower. It started off as sleet but then rapidly turned to all snow and got very heavy, with the wind there were blizzard conditions for a time and i went up the fields and it was blowing completely horizontally! It felt feckin' freezin though. I think most people are going to see snow showers today because the radar is covered in them and thay are movin very rapidly south. The snow shower over me lasted about 10-15mins but didn't stick. I can see another one closing in now!
