I apparently have to record my Leaving Cert composition pieces and submit a CD with the portfolio. I haven't recorded at home before, so what do I need, minimum, to get the pieces on CD? They'll be played on electric and acoustic guitars and bass guitar, for the most part.

A sound card, microphone, and half decent PC. I like this soundcard:

And this mic will serve you well:

Why do you have to record your compositions? Frankly, I think that's BS. Do the people asking for a CD know how incredibly involved home recording and mixing is? If you need a hand with the basics, let me know I'll try help.

No idea to be honest, just what I have to do according to the chief examiner. Portfolio of scores, along with recordings of performance, two years of a diary and all notes.

I may take you up on that, when the time comes, it's all a little hefty.

If I were you I'd ask the head examiner what exactly he's expecting in terms of quality. You're gonna have kids who have amazing home studios and kid that have tape machines. And a good song doesn't always hold up when t'c caught on tape, that takes practice.

What program would you use then Paul? Starting off myself and want to buy something like the above.

Have been using Audacity as a program and the mic from a cheap headset (I know!).

Would like to get decent quality on CD but not looking to spend too much.

    thanks for any info

    K.

Hey man! The Tascam comes with Cubase LE which is basically a watered down version of the high end Cubase stuff from Steinberg. It's still a cool little program though. What kinda spec has your computer got?

3 things will affect how good your recordings are:

    1) Quality of the musician
    2) Quality of the equipment
    3) Quality of the engineer (you).

    Hi Paul -

dumbass question coming up - do you use a mic for the instrument amps or would it ever suffice to provide a direct feed to the program and use the effects on that? I woudnt think so but thought i'd ask

another big time recording novice - as thread says, it wasnt me..:)

also...regarding programming drums n stuff - does the prgram you mentioned do any of that jazz or whats best for starters?

    thanks in advance
    G
