Criticism and Opinions wanted

So I'm recording an album this year and I've a load of tracks, about 30 infact, that I was tempted to use. I cut them down to 21 and threw them up on the net for people to give me their opinion.

Now, some people might criticise me for doing this as it takes away from my artistic message or whatever, but I'm still going to ultimately pick the songs and help produce them, it's just a case of there being too many directions it might go in. It could be a nice soft and subtle album, or it could go in a more country way, or maybe go for the pop indie rock approach... I really don't know. I enjoy playing all my songs, I wrote them as memories for parts of my life, I can instantly recall what each song was about and why it was written, so it's too hard for me to cut out a song because I might have attached emotions that elevate it above the actual song it is.

So anyhows, if you feel up to it ... go to www.frankiewhelan.com (it'll just link you to my cpu page) and there you'll find a blog explaining what I need done and then in the audio section you'll find 21 songs.
The songs are of varying quality and some are a bit rough. This was meant to be done months ago but I had a hard drive crash and all my work in progress recordings were lost, so some of them aren't the best representation of my vocals and others were recorded at differant times etc.

I'm always up for constructive criticism so please have a listen. The songs are all free to download so might be something to do while commuting or something.

    Thanks

This kind of music isn't really my taste so I can't give a really reliable opinion in that sense! Listened to bits and pieces of a few, I thought the Spider Song was pretty deadly. One thing I will say is that most of them are all in the same key, which isn't a really good idea. Maybe I'm wrong, but just from humming along, it seems that way. If they are all in the same key I'm sure you'll know yourself it wouldn't be any harm to transcribe a few of them to a different key!

Nah, they're not all in the same key, though most of the recordings are done with a guitar tuned to standard D. Now, I'm saying they're not in the same key, but I'm not really that great when it comes to the technicalities of ye olde guitar, though I'm pretty sure they're not.
Glad you like Spider Song, it's the way alot of my new stuff is going and strangely people seem to like it.

I listened to Days Fly Away and Donkey Kong Sad Song just to get me started. Good example of modern singer-songwriter stuff. I liked the guitar work and the songs are vocally strong too. Good stuff!

There's certainly alot of potential there, "Donkey Kong Sad Song" is a nice (albeit unusual) song which i always think is good, My only critisism is, i thought the guitar and vocals were slightly out of key with each other but that could be my dodgy speakers acting up again....but all in all its not bad!

Thought best songs were Mister Mover and Feeling Inside

Sweet, thanks for the input guys... I kinda thought this thread had died. Yeah, I've roughly picked out 14 tracks I want to get down properly, Mister Mover and Donkey Kong Sad Song both being selected. Some other tracks I liked but they didn't really work in the context of an album (too many slow songs, quirky ones, basic ones etc) so I have one or two put to one side for B-sides etc. :)
