Wisdom teeth!

Hi all. All 4 of my wisdom teeth are coming through at once but one of them has me crawling the walls. It's excruciating. At present it is causing the jaw directly under it to hurt and is also giving me a earache and sore throat. When I look at it it appears the point where my cheek joins my gum at the very back (behind the tooth) is aggravated and swollen. I've put bonjela on it to no avail. I also can't even shut my mouth cause the swollen skin gets stuck and hurts an awful lot.

Is this normal or should I go to the dentist? How much would a consultation cost on average and how much would it cost should I need to get it removed? I'm a college student and money is tight. Would a medical card cover this treatment as I know certain dentists accept the medical card.

If you can't close your mouth because of the problems it's causing then yes you should go to a dentist! A consultation is likely to be covered by your medical card but the only way you'll know for sure is to phone a dental surgery. Do it now :)

    Hi!
Here's my experience with my wisdom teeth - had absolutely no trouble with them. BUt they were impacted so I was advised by my dentist to get them out. Went for consultation to a specialist - cost me 100 Euro . Decided that 3 should come out. Got this done cost me 900 Euro.

Was very painful - the actual operation itself was a breeze! I was on cloud nine, had sedation you see! But the after pain was fairly tough.
Got through it anyway - and I've just sent in my Med 1 form or maybe it was a med 2 form not sure, hoping to claim back some of the money!! I'm still waiting to see what they'll give me back, but i'm not holding my breath.

My advise to you is if you can't close your mouth then you obviously need to do something about this. But having said that bear in mind that it can be quite costly! Make sure you ask them how you'd be covered with your medical card etc, unfortunately i didn't have one!! :(

How would I find out what dentists accept the medical card? I know I need to go to the dentist but there is no way in hell I could afford it.

Don't need to reply to my above message as I eventually got an appointment. I have to say I'm very disappointed with the service I got, or maybe I'm unlucky. Rang about 20 dentists - the ones who accepted the medical card all told me the next available emergency appointment would be in about 4 - 6 weeks. Some emergency huh? If I didn't take an emergency appointment I'd be waiting even longer.

Any other dentists who didn't accept the medical card were all quoting me over €150 for a consultation and xray but at the same time wouldn't give me an absolute definite price. I wasn't impressed by this, how hard is it to price something they probably do regularly?

I eventually got an appointment for 2 weeks away and even then the receptionist was very rude and didn't give me the time of day to answer my questions which has not left me feeling very confident at all but hey, beggers can't be choosers...or rather people in tears from the pain can't last a month.

Sorry about the rant, I'm very upset.

Have you tried the Dental Hospital?
They only do emergency cases, but if you are in severe pain, they might take you and help you to get over the next 2 weeks.

Got one out last monday on an emergency appointment (4 days) - cost me €45 with my PRSI and was completely painless, back in work the following day. Maybe they dont all need to come out and just 2 could solve the problem and save u alot of hassle.

oh btw, if its your upper teeth then its very straight forward. If it your lower teeth it might be a tad more complicated .... Mine were close to a nerve so I had to go to specialist....or maybe I was just duped!! 1000 For teeth?

It's a lower one. I'm going to stock up on cloves, painkillers, salt water and mouthwash and hopefully I'll survive until Monday. Just remembered that I recently had to reapply for my medical card, what's the bets that my card has now expired and I haven't received a new one?

mdebets, is the Dental Hospital in Dublin or is there one everywhere? I'm in Kilkenny so I can't really get to Dublin.

Yep, it's Dublin, part of Trinity College.

Why don't some dentists accept medical cards? I would have thought everyone was a fan of medical cards. Are they a lot of paperwork, or are some dentists just not on the GMS scheme?

Anyway, OP try finding out if you can get a refund on treatment with a medical card, is that allowed?

I had to have an operation to remove my wisdom teeth quite recently, so I can sympathise with how you must be feeling

Just an update. Went to the dentist yesterday and he took out the wisdom tooth above the troublesome one. Apparently this takes some pressure off the sore tooth and allows it to come in easier. If the procedure doesn't help I'll be off to hospital to get it out. The whole thing was easy and pain free. The dentist just numbed me, wrenched the tooth out and off I went. Was very sore later on but am pain free today and am back to solid foods. Hopefully this will be the end of it!

danindublin - you didn't mention where you got yours done??

i have one that has come up back left - it's extremely annoying and causes sores in my gum every so often. i spent a good while checking on the revenue site yesterday about what can be claimed through PRSI, said something about 290 PRSI contributions...do they have to be continuous?

I definitely have that many overall but would have had work breaks during that time for college etc. Do all dentists take the PRSI contributions?
