Why not just buy a new head unit there are some nice MP3 playing head units in Argos. I've just bought the Acoustic Solutions ICS160 which is nice unit - just hook up your MP3 player and play :)

See if theres aux connectors and plug a MP3 through it. Don't be messing with CD's.

Try looking on http://www.connects2.com Loads of options for connecting stuff up to both original equipment and aftermarket head units.

I bought something similar to (would have to go diging in the dashboard to find it for exact model - behind glovebox) http://www.connects2.com/c2search.aspx?catID=42&manID=209&modID=791 along with a Song 6 Disc CD/MP3 changer in the boot (was thinking of under passenger/driver seat also) works a treat including the stalk controls. + the old trick of hangers to pull the head unit out. All in took about 30 mins including mounting changer in boot.
