Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

How often to wash one's hair

After I asked for advice on hair masks at my local beauty store, I ended up having a long discussion with the assistant about hair.

I wash my hair every day or every other day, although when younger I only did so once a week. This assistant said hair only needed to be washed twice a week.

I really want to return to such a rhythm as I know it's bad for my hair (too much washing, brushing leading to split ends). My question is: How long will it take for my hair to get used to being washed only twice a week?(ie not greasy every other day). I would classify my hair as normal, but fragile (always split ends, regardless of how often I cut hair or condition)

I wash my hair every two days. It also comes down to what kind of shampoo you are using as well. If you use a specialist one that cater to your hair's needs (like Kerastase) you gotta remember they are ... somewhat more potent than supermarket shampoo.

Once every 2 days is ok as you are stripping the hair of its natural oils as well as contributing to split ends if yuo do it every day (my hair is a mess cause i wash it every day), try not to blow dry al the time also as it can dry your hair out to nothing.

I would vary the cleaning products/shampoo's used on your hair as well as use of the same over time can leave it lank or give dry scalp.

The less you wash it, the less you need to wash it, is what I find. I use a bit of baby shampoo or Burt's Bees shampoo soap every other day...something gentle enough that won't wreck your hair too much and will let it stay shiny.

Don't know if this off-topic but I saw something on E a good while back that using baby powder in your hair is good if you don't have time to wash it. It gets rid of the oily look.

I did this. I was washing my hair every day or every second day, its long enough and it was getting to be a real chore, and paying over 100 quid to get colours in and have them fade very quick was annoying also!!

It will take probaly id say about 2-3 weeks to get ur hair used to not being washed. U can buy Batiste Dry Shampoo in most chemists and all Boots stores, its like what another poster said about using powder. U just spray it on, leave it for a minute and brush it out, and the greasy look is gone. I have not tried powder but i think years ago people used powder. I know a girl who just uses water to wash her hair, no shampoo/conditioner, and she really has the most fab hair i have ever seen, the shine off it is incredible!!

I wash my hair every two to three days, about three times a week. I do let my hair get a bit nasty before I wash it but have to have it tied back for work so I can get away with it for a day.

I use the GHD twice/three a week and primarily use Pantene shampoo and conditioner the sheer volume one. My hairdresser cannot believe that I take so little care of my hair and still have no split ends. If my hair does need a boost I will use the Aussie 3min miracle.

Unfortunately my hair dies not hold a coulr very well. They just seem to fade so quickly. I wonder is this because of the products in the hairdressers or my haircare.....?

i had heard this too and tried it out one day when i didn't have time to wash my hair and it works. the powder seems to soak up the grease. you have to really rub it in though otherwise you end up with grey hair

Yeah the powder thing is a lifesaver on a hungover morning, but i don;t like that Batiste stuff. I use Johnson's baby powder and work it right in and it gets rid of the grease.

    Problem solved (yay)

ok, you are all going to think i am a skanger but .........i wash my hair about once every two weeks, sometimes more. i have very curly hair which i used to wash everyday to control. then i shaved my hair and never had to wash my hair. so i never really go back into washing it all the time and my hair is in brilliant condition, never have split ends, its never really frizzy and it actually has a bit of a shine off it which is usually for curly hair. the best thing you can do is not washing your hair :D

The best dry shampoo is this one http://www.boots.com/shop/product_details.jsp?productid=1012075
The baby powder only works on really really greasy hair.

I had hair extensions (braids) when I was 19 and rinsed a couple of times, but didn't wash my hair more than twice while I had them and they never were greasy or smelly.

Tbh wash your hair as often as it needs to be washed. It's a totally personal thing. Just like how much water a person needs to drink each day. Everyone is different.
