Network Monitoring software

Does anyone know of any names of reliable and efficient Network monitoring software?
Trying to get one for a small office network but have never used anything like this before. Really only want something simple to make sure there is an even spread of internet traffic so that all the bandwidth isn't being hogged by one machine.
    Would really appreciate any tips.

    I find Zenoss quite good.

This seems to be more a Network Administration peice of Software?
I don't really need anything too powerful, just internet usage monitoring software.... or does Zenoss monitor web traffic too? I had a look at the site but couldn't see anything pointing to that.

What firewall are you using? This is pretty versatile and reasonably priced : http://manageengine.adventnet.com/products/firewall/index.html

You could do it for free with a spare box , put linux/bsd on it and look at queueing

www.cacti.net - SNMP polling and graphing - alot of good stuff in the vanilla install. www.cactiusers.org has the Plugin Architecture patch and a few good plugins. PHP Weathermap and Links plugins are also useful.

In your case if your network equipment supports SNMP you should be able to monitor and graph the bandwidth usage on each port of the switch(es).

There's also MRTG, which is a forerunner of cacti, a bit more manual, but it's easy to setup, configuration is all done through one file.

Smokeping (latency graphing, easy to setup)

You could take a look at Netflow.

One PC/server, install debian/ubuntu/distro of choice, install and configure a few of these apps, and you'll have quite alot of information to generate reports from.

As bushy suggested, if you have a spare machine (doesn't even have to be hi-spec), throw some version of Linux onto it and setup a proxy server. Squid is pretty good, and you can do all the monitoring and adminstration you could ever want!

edit, you should be looking at a proxy server anyways if its internet usage you want to look at
