I don't think I could get laser surgery, as I'm really shortsighted - -10.5 in both eyes. They'd have to sew an extra lens in there or something. And even at that, if you're very shortsighted it's probable that your eyeballs are too thin to do it safely.

I wear glasses now, used to wear contacts; maybe I'll investigate the weeklies option, which sounds good. The monthlies - well, that sounds too long a time to be hygienic, somehow.

As for cavemen, etc, take a look at this BBC article from - heavens - 2002. I haven't heard if any follow-up was done on the study:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/1909075.stm

    Bread blamed for short sight

Short-sightedness could be linked to childhood over-consumption of bread, rather than holding books too close, researchers suggest.

Scientists say diets high in refined starches, such as breads and cereals increase insulin levels in children.

This, they say, may then affect the development of the eyeball.

The theory put forward by the researchers from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, and the University of Sydney is that the excess hormone makes the eyeball abnormally long and causes short-sightedness.

I considered laser surgery when I was 18 - but now I'm a full-time graphic designer so if anything went wrong even slightly my income would be at risk.

I've gone through the hard contact lenses and the soft ones over the years but scrutinizing computer screens as I often have to do is not as easy with contacts I find (they tend to shift microscopically sometimes).

I don't love glasses - they're ok but laser surgery still seems extreme. If they'd been doing lasery surgery before I was born I'd probably be more encouraged but growing up during its introduction makes me think it's still a little too early.

Thoughts of "flaps" opening etc. Really put me off way more than uncomfortable metal on my nose or poking my eye with rubber.

Standard, perfect vision (in this country) is 6:6 - anything minus is short sight, anything plus is long sight, as I understand.

Been using contact for 17 years. Used to use monthly but use daily lenses now.

I think that with most people, if you wear monthlys for several years you have to switch to the dailys as the contacts start to reject them. Im having the same problem, but I switched back to monthlys and was given the "OK" to wear them unless it starts getting itchy or irratated again.
Wear glasses at home and when not working/playing.

Always being told to do this to give my eyes some rest. But A) Im to lazy and B) I hate glasses SO much.
Too afraid to get laser eye surgery done :(

Afraid of the after affects or just surgery in general? I personaly just would be scared that id go blind, or my eyes would deterate again in years to come. I dont think Laser Surgery is around long enough to know the long term affects. Plus, it costs a fortune over here!
