French Amphibious Exercise

I was going to Toulon today and spotted a lot of military helicopter activity near Hyeres. I followed them and disovered a French Army / Navy amphibious landing exercise in progress just along the coast from the town. I took a load of photos, not great quality I'll admit but very interesting nonetheless. There were a lot of low altitude fighter fly-bys, too quick to get a pic.

Here's a slideshow of my photos.

I'll upload the full size images if anybody is interested.

    That's a lot of photos! :)

I notice a Panhard VBL in there somewhere, as well as the VEXTRA with the 105mm. Could you make out what aircraft they were using?

I'm amazed that you were permitted a) so close to the landing area and b) to take photos!

I was standing at an open gateway about 2m away from a pair of armed sentries. They didn't seem to mind as long as I didn't enter through the gateway. There were at least three landing craft visible. I suspect that there were four and at any given time one was inside the main ship loading/unloading. Helicopters were doing take offs and landing onto the ship also. Some were lighter attack type and others were larger Dauphin style transporters. I'm not sure of the models but it's a fair bet that they were French made. There ws also several low level fly-bys of Mirage fighter jets, too fast to get photos of them. They came in and out of sight so quickly. All in all I was very impressed. I only wish that the day had been brighter for the photos. Quite a few didn't come out at all. That part of the beach is cordone off as Military Terrain. I'm going to keep an eye on it in future. I need a better camera.
