Help for a mature student on a fruitless Summer job hunt in Cork?

When I'm not at uni I live in Cork city and for successive Summers have been unable to get a sniff of a job, aside from about 3 or 4 days temping total for each 4 month period! I've started sending off applications again for this coming Summer (difficult to interview when I'm in America!) but I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing or if anyone has any tips on how to get any kind of job?

I'm not that fussy, before I went to college (I'm 25 now) I worked in insurance, I have all my exams for that from the UK but no brokers in Cork seem to want Summer people. I always try retail (Dunnes, Tesco etc) but again no vacancies yada yada. I check fas.ie and some other sites a few times a week and am always whizzing my CV off somewhere but if I ever do get a reply it's that they're not hiring for the Summer. Agencies in Cork (maybe an Irish thing?) are just as bad, they advertise that they have hundreds of clerical temping jobs that are "urgent" yet when you go through the whole registration process they have nothing available but will keep you on file!.

Needless to say I am getting pretty desperate! I can't afford another Summer on my bum and would appreciate any constructive advice!

    Thanks :D

    Wow thanks for that!

I've applied for that and a couple of others, and I'm going to contact some places I unsuccessfully interviewed at last Summer.

Anyone have any other ideas I'd love to hear them!

I'm in exactly the same boat. I learned to hate temping agencies last summer as well. If anyone has any ideas of something that ellscurr hasn't been interested in I'd love to hear them too. Thanks!

I worked for La Creme for 10 months last year, and have nothing but good things to say about them. They kept me in pretty constant work for the whole time.

I worked for LaCreme too and though they were the best of a bad bunch they were pretty poor in any other terms. Agencies seem pretty useless here...I haven't given up on them but I don't hold out much hope either!

There a few jobs going at the place I'm working. Basically the company outsources call centre work for a number of companies (ESB, an post among others). They recently won a contract with sky TV and they're looking for call centre agents.

I'd apply directly through the website rather than through an agency if I were you. The job is in Bishopstown which can be a bit of a pain in the arse to get out to in the mornings and the wages are sh*t considering the greif you have to put up with from arseholes customers but it sure beats working for McDonalds (I would think so anyway).

hurry up as they've already started intervewing:

By the way, pretend you're a college dropout coz they're looking for permanent people.
