This stems from a chat with our brother Vegeta.

It are a fact, everything tastes better in a sambo... Two thick cuts of whatever your bread of choice is with copious amounts of butter/condiment

    Fry: check.
    Pizza: check.
Toasted Sandwich (in un-toasted bread): check
    Indian takeaway (naan sandwich): check
    Lasagne: check
    Any pasta dish: check
    Any meat: check
    Battered sausages... Hell ya check

Additions or opinions welcome... I'd like to try new types of glorious sandwich... In fact, should we have an official sandwich... ?

Yes ... it are a fact.

Case in point ... Chips on Brennan's white bread with butter (mmmm). Timeless classic, widely known but worth mentioning nonetheless.

I am particularly fond of the lasagne sandwich, the stew sandwich and the world famous Granny's Coddle sandwich .... mmmmm :p

Definitely. Although to be honest I wouldn't have a...rice and curry sandwich? That's just asking for trouble. The sandwich would be in bits before you even took a bite!

Nothing in the world tastes better then a banana sandwich with toasted bread. Seriously. As least, nothing that isn't going to shorten my life by a few odd months!

Stick a bit of honey on that banana on toast and your laughin'.

Its easier if you put the curry and rice into a roll, hold it together a bit better.

I'm also a fan of the tayto & cheese sambos, theyre the business.

A guy I used to work with was a big fan of apple and chocolate in a white bread sandwich, never saw the appeal there myself.

As a kid I had sugar sandwiches, apple sandwiches, banana sandwiches but I wouldn't eat them now. I'm a savoury kinda guy, not into sweet stuff. Now a bacon fries sandwich, fookin lovely.

If you have not done this you have to try it, such a great way to eat it. let it cool a bit though as it is more solid then and easier to lump between two slices.

My brother was partial to a brown vinegar sandwich when he was younger, have never tried that one myself.

If it can't fit between two lumps of bread it's not food !

When I was a kid my mother used to make bread and jam sambos, cut them in quaters and dip them in batter and fry them on the pan, Heaven :D

Here's a good sambo for you:

2 slabs of your finest bread
    4 cooked sausages (still hot)
    Ham
    Cheese
    Mayo

It'll make your gut progress like no other!!!

I tried but I just found it wasn't as nice as I thought it would be....although I did used to eat sprinkle sandwiches....which is pretty much just further flavoured sugar!

This thread is truly the work of the devil. I'm tempted to go and try half these creations.

    2 sausages
    1 Fried egg
    Black pudding
    Hash brown
    White Bread

Cook up your fry and place between 2 well buttered pieces of white bread. Now put the sandwich back in the same pan that you cooked up the fry in. Same grease and everything. MMMMTASTY.

A friend of mine has one he calls the John J Rambo Sambo TM. Which basically consists of getting a sandwich made with everything at the deli counter. Just when the deli worker thinks your finished you poliltey tell her its time to move on to the hot counter and throw in a few sausages and spicy chicken fillet for good measure.

This was passed down to me by an old housemate. I was wary at first, but it is definitely more than the sum of its parts:

Toasted brown bread (the proper McCambridge's sort, not a brown sliced pan)
    Plenty of butter
Raspberry jam (has to be raspberry, not really sure why)
    Sliced bananas

    easi-singles rolls

Please, easi-singles are not cheese, they're rubber, like the phlegm you cough up after a night on the tear. Get yourself some mature red cheddar.

About to make two of the following:

Brennans Wholegrain Bread (Taste reasons, not health reasons)
Real Butter (Who's taking the horse ta France, pappa?)
    Coleman's Mustard
Butcher Ham (Not that 'butcher style' **** they sell in supermarkets)
    Mature Red Cheddar
    Tomatos
Coleslaw (You have to be careful here, there's lots of crap going around)
    Cucumber
    Lettuce

Follow that with a fresh cup of ground coffee and Robert's your father's brother.

No man, you've got real butter, coleslaw, mustard, slices of pig. I fcuking love pig me. It's like the burger of sandwiches, burgers come with veg on them and are good, so why can't a monster sandwich be good with veg on it.

TBH I don't care if it's healthy, it taste good!

Indeed but easi-singles melt into nacho cheese and work better with bolognaise rolls, nachos etc.

Interesting, I might give it a go.
    Weetabix sandwich?

A friend of mine in college used to eat these. He used to spead butter on them as well and eat them like rivita.

my fave sambo has to be thick batch bread, coverd in butter with a freshly fried egg and a generous dollop of red sauce..mmmmmmmmmmm or a leak and spuds soup with spuds sambo!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,625 ✭✭✭Sofaspud

You never know how much you love sandwiches until you run out of bread. Everytime I run out of it, I realise that there is NOTHING TO EAT IN THE DAMN HOUSE!

Then when my ma gets back from the shops, I fry an egg and two sausages, stick two rashers in the grill, slap that between two slices of Brennan's finest and go on my merry way.

I had a sandwich today called a fluffernutter...

    Batch bread
    Marshmallow Fluff (google it)
    Crunchy peanut butter

The saltiness of the peanut butter was perfectly set off by the sweetness of the marshmallow fluff... tomorrow I'm going to try it toasted which I can only imagine would heighten the taste sensation....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,837 ✭✭✭abelard

    My favourite sandwich.....

    Thick white bread
    Inch or so of butter
    fried chicken
    Streaky bacon
    pile of Swiss cheese
    Ballymaloe tomato relish

Shove it under the grill. Food heaven.
