    Have version 13.0 SPSS, but can't part with it. If you have to buy retail, consider a student edition (provided that you do not have heavy variable requirements). If you do plan crunching huge variable sets, and need all the bells and whistles of the professional edition, you can save a lot by purchasing the graduate student edition, which is identical to the professional, except for price (about one third) and the wrapper they enclose it in. Runs fine with XP2. Not sure if there will be compatibility problems with VISTA.

    If you're in an institution ask computer services to put a copy on your computer - may save you some money. Otherwise go with the advice above.

    If you're in TCD you can get a copy from ISS for €7 (price at the start of the year), you'll need a postal order, not cash.
