Hanging wooden gates

Whats the best way to hang wooden gates to a stone pier? I could secure a wooden post to the pier inner block and build stone to the edge of that or can you get hangers that will attach to a stone wall? Also what sort of automation systems are best for wooden gates? Dont intend to add now but what provisions should I make…

you can get hinges which are like this: ]D (looking down from the top of the gate) and then the point has a hole in it and it pivots on an arm on the pillar. See link below to see what i am talking about..(Harrhanging)

Get them in woodies or most bigger garden centers.
