Was wondering if anyone could tell me if you could get a half decent road bike for between 300-400 and if so where would be the best place to get it?

In a word no. There are bikes in the 300-400 range and they are pure rubbish. No STI levers, the worst no-name parts imaginable etc.... Toys rather than sports equipment.

Even the Giant OCR4 (469 in Cyclesuperstore.ie) which is the lowest price big name brand bike is poor enough, although if you are just starting out it will do for a while. (Got on of these for under 400 for the GF who is starting triathlons this year on wiggle.co.uk)

Entry level tends to be Trek 1000, Specialised Allez, maybe even one of the Lapierres. I think your best bet is second hand. I know of people who have picked up nearly new TREK 1000's for 400 or less on Buyandsell.ie, a mate of mine also starting triathlons got an aluminium framed, carbon forked, Tiagra/Mavic equipped Sintesi for 300, it was a bit scruffy but rode well. Bargains are always popping up there, but they are sporadic.
