E46 Questions

    Hi
Just recently purchased a 318CI (absolutely love it by the way) and i have a few questions

inside it has a motion sensor alarm thing and the alarm works because i left the rear windor open and closed the car and waved my hand inside and the alarm went off. my questions are the alarm does not go off if i rock the car or bang the window is this a type of alarm that was provided on the E46? when i close the car and activate the alarm there is no beep (i know you can get this turned on) can i activate this myself? Can i change the type of alarm beep myself?

Another question about locking the car when i hold down the open button on the key it opens the car and after a few second the windows and sunroof (this is expected) but when i hold down the close button it close the car the drivers and passangers window, only closes the sunroof halk way but doesnt close the rear windows even though they open when i hold the open button down, any ideas why this is happening to the sunroof and rear windows?

Apologies for all the questions but i am finding new cool stuff with this car every minute.

    What year is the 318?

Alarms are different. Som have motion (US) sensors - others have shock sensors. BMWs with a factory fit alarm, will have the alarm bleep turned off as in most EU counties it is illegal - but not in Ireland.

Your othe question about 'comfort locking' is odd. It should close all windows and the S/R once you keep your finger on the 'lock' button. Have you changed the battery in the remote (later BMW's charge the battery once the key is in the ignition).

If you are in any doubt, contact a BMW dealer or a competent BMW specialist.

It makes an attempt to close the S/R but goes so far and then returns it to the half open position its a 01 318ci

Does the S/R close as normal when you press/turn the sunroof switch?

The comfort locking is working exactly as it should for the rear windows - they never close with the key, as they don't have anti-trap sensors on them.

The sunroof should close all the way though.

I wasn't aware that a BMW didn't close the rear windows via comfort locking. VWs & Audis do. I imagine Skoda and Seat would follow suit.

Not on the coupe anyway - the rears open outwards rather than up/down

Yeah - probably not on the comfort locking loop. But it would be nice to know that all is locked after pressing the wee button on the remote.

Slightly hijacking the thread, but is this comfort locking lark common?

would it be in an '07 A4 for instance??

when i initially pressed to sunroof switch it used to do the same thing (try to close fully and then return to the 3/4 closed position) but i read the manual and held the botton in the close position for 10 seconds and now when i close the sunroof with the botton it closes fully.

Thanks for your help with this it helps put my mind at ease, would you have any idea about the alarm question it would be great if i could configure the alarm so it would go off if someone bumped up against the car.

P.S. these cars are amazing from now on its nothing but BMW :D

I think the electric windows in the A4 can be locked via the remote key fob. But alot of A4s even 2007 models have manual rear windows.

I would presume a factory fitted electric sunroof would be wired to this system too.

I don't think theres a shock sensor built in to the standard alarm - as you're probably aware, the motion sensor is the main part of the alarm - but there are electric deadlocks as well, and your car can't be started without the key.

It might be possible to tie in a shock sensor to the factory alarm - but I'm not completely certain if thats an option.

I've had my 7 year old 323Ci since July last year and I'm still finding cool stuff. Did you know that when you push the ashtray cover flap all the way back that the ash tray pops up? Found that one today.

Rear windows on the coupe won't close as they don't have one touch closing. (Try it when you're in the car) It's probably a safety thing so your hamster won't get his head squashed when you close the window, but don't forget to look behind you when you are closing those windows just in case your hamster is getting some air. :)

Don't know about the sunroof. Mine doesn't have one which is just as well 'cos when it's hot and sunny and the sunroof is open all the cold air from the a/c goes out the roof and anyway my head gets burnt 'cos I've no hair on it.

Edit : I just bothered my arse to read all the replies that cover what I just said. Sorry for repeating.

Yep. Step out of the car with the windows open. Press and hold the lock button on the key. All windows and the sunroof will close as long as you hold the lock button down.

Didn't know that feature existed! Woot!
On my 98 passat when I turned on the alarm the windows went up auto-magically. Though it was a pain when on my E39 I had to put them up manually. Thanks for the info lads
