They make a lot of money suing the arses of people who retaliate to their pickets. Say they're out somewhere picketing and someone at a funeral takes offence and comes and slaps one of them round the mush - big lawsuit for assault and battery, or whatever the American term is.
Fred Phelps, the head honcho was a leading civil rights activist and lawyer, back in the day and the family lawyers all work in the family practice, I'd say they get lots of business in the Bible belt, where they live. It's not like they're the only fundamentalists round those parts.
Take religious fundamentalism, sound legal and constitutional knowledge and a litigious culture and I bet they're just raking in the cash.

I'd imagine they're not keen on the WBC because Phelps made his name as a lawyer during the time of the civil rights movement in America, defending the black people. Their lawyers have long been involved with racial disputes and prosecuting cases of racial discrimination, taking the cases of black people who've been discriminated against. They also have been involved in a number of sexual discrimination cases.
The KKK don't like black people and uppity women. Even more than they don't like homosexuals.

Fire and brimstone religious teachings actually are part of the KKK's agenda. Yeah, bizarrely, Phelps was a civil rights lawyer in the '60s so you could be on to something. Also, I'm sure the KKK is a very patriotic organisation so the pickets wouldn't go down well either.

Just watched this online, and i have to say, I really feel sorry for the whole family apart from "Gramps" who obviously has some deep reason for hating homosexuals, It really seemed like he was the only one who really believed in what he was saying. The rest of the family sound like they've been brainwashed into this and one or two nearly said some things to show they really didn't believe in their message, but gathered themselves at the last minute.

The one thing i noticed about it was when Louis couldn't get an answer from "gramps" on any of his questions. Seemed like he didn't want Louis there in case he uncovered some truth. well that's my opinion on "gramps' " behaviour, others might think differently.

I've been following that scumbag Phelps for a while. I actually share my birthday with him, which annoys me to no end.
Have any of you guys heard of the Patriot Guard? They are the perfect answer to Phelpsand the Westboro Baptist Churchy, who I DO feel should legally be allowed do what they do, repugnant as they may be. The Patriot Guard are a large crowd of mostly bikers, but anyone is free to join them. They show up at the funerals of soldiers to show their solidarity (if they get invited, unlike Phelps), and to block the protestors off. Having seen footage of them online, they are extremeley effective. There are hundreds of flags, etc, making the few dozen protestors invisible, and they sing songs to cover any heckling, and even rev the engines on their bikes if need be.

If one were so inclined, one may be able to find footage of them on youtube. It is very cool to see.

burn on Canada though, flying the flag upside down.. I was wondering what the hell they were doing flying a canadian flag, then I copped it was upside down and it took a further ten seconds or so 'fore I copped what that meant

can't approve of the anti-canadian posturing, but otherwise bloody fantastic.

Yes, Canada passed the Chick Phelps law precipitated in part by them as mentioned earlier in the thread. Swedish and Canadian flags have been incorporated into their protests along with the stars&stripes. Can the Irish flag be far behind? Didn't Frau Phelps call Irish born Oscar Wilde "Lord of the Fags" once?

I have to say it all seems very camp to me. I wonder if it is all just an elaborate piss-take.
