hey people, just a quick query, what would my band need to purchase in order to mic up a drum kit for live gigs, and the moment just using an SM58 on the snare and one on the bass drum.

Pretty sure that in order to do it properly we'll have to change this around and get proper stuff, any idea wats needed and how much we can expect it all to cost???

    Cheers,

    Alan

If you don't have a big budget this will do for you

    http://www.thomann.de/ie/samson_8kit_drumset.htm

Otherwise you can use a Shure Sm57 for snare an toms (one of the best mic for instruments.....)

And something with a large diaphragm for the kick such:

    http://www.thomann.de/ie/akg_d112_set.htm

    or

    http://www.thomann.de/ie/shure_beta_52.htm

    Sm 57 also for hi-hat.........

Look what is best for you......:D

    My recmmendations:
Kick: Shure Beta 52a (or AKGD112). Look at Beta 91 if you want best kick sound ever.
Snare: SM57 or Beta 57A, failsafe.
Hats: Beta 98 or AKG c1000s (or similar condenser, sm57 would be "ok")
    Toms: Sennheiser e604 clip ons
    Overheads: AKG C1000s

Possible addons: DBX Compressor & Gate. Knowing your setup would help a bit too.

As with everything, there is never only one answer to a "What mic" thread. Choice is good :)

Ever heard of www.musicstore.com or www.thomann.de?

Another alternative i'd reccomend is using a trigger set with a decent module, all your gating/compression problems are solved. but i'd still go with the 57 on the hats and the akg's for overheads.

Your looking at around 800-1000 just for a decent mic'ing situation. at least with the triggers the gating and compression is sorted and easier to setup.

Then again it's all up to your personal preference. (and budget!!!)

Good sound don't come cheap, but advice does!

I used to gate & compress everything on the kit, nowadays I hardly ever use gates at all.

I ran all the above gear thru the Thomann site and the basket total came to €976 for Beta 52A, an SM57, two c1000's and three 604's. Add stands, cables and a suitable carry case I'd say €1200 for an industry standard drum mic set-up.

As I said, knowing more about the OP's set-up would help a great deal. In many small venues/bars/clubs you wouldn't be mic'ing everything up on the kit as it can cause all sorts of problems if you dont have a decent rig.

Remember, crap in = crap out
No one mic will save any crap sound from source. If your drums are properly tuned etc. then the mics will recreate that, but only if you have a good mixing desk. When you start looking into these things you quickly realise it's about everything in the signal chain, you can spend €5k on drum mics but if you run them into a Behringer mixer you'll be cancelling out the good with the bad (or in some cases, the ugly).
