Simple question: Are penalty points counted as a conviction? Does acceptance of 2 points lead to a criminal record?

according to the letter I have in front of me you are not prosecuted if you accept the 2 points and pay a fine in the 56 days from the date of the notice.

presumably since you are not prosecuted and don't go to court you couldn't have a conviction.
