Volvo (Mitsubishi) timing belt questions

Can anyone recommend an independent Volvo specialist (rather than a Volvo dealer) to change a timing belt in an S40 - in South Dublin area?

FWIW, it's the 1.8 GDI Mitsubishi engine (1834 cc, badged 1.8i).

Alternatively, should a Mitsubishi specialist be able to do this - anyone
    recommend one ?

(The garage I normally go to claim they don't have the tools to tighten the belt on an S40).

    Cheers.

I'm hearing similar noises about the belt in my S80. Volvo dealers don't like doing it. You'd think that Volvo would make sure that their franchise dealers were ready, willing and able to do all routine servicing on the cars they sell, wouldn't you?

Does anyone know of a competent independant in or around Limerick that could be let loose on an S80 (without robbing me blind)?

Any luck finding an independent service shop in Limerick area (Im in N. Tipp) - Im going to need one in future as Ive had enough of Elm Motors on the Ennis Rd (financially and customer-care wise) ?

The timing belt is an full day job, and a very expensive one.

When my family's S40 with that engine needed the timing belt(in addition to a full service, cause they(the timing belt) need to be done at 60 k miles) it cost around €800. Now that was 3 years ago(and at a Volvo main dealer).

The GDI engine is a very tempermental and complex engine, so make sure that the person that does the job is very fimiliar with that engine. If you don't service it on time and don't do things when they're supposed to be done, you'll regret it bigtime.

I'm loathe to recommend Volvo dealers for anything, but you should really go to a Volvo dealer to get it done. The engine is actually modified by Volvo slightly, but its more to do with the ECU than anything else, so a Mitsubishi dealer should be well able to do the job.

Its also quite a rare engine on our roads, so not many mechanics will be familiar with it, hence why I said be sure the mechanic knows that engine quite well.

You don't want someone to make a balls of it....the parts for the engine are very expensive.

The annoying thing is that Volvo dealers don't actually seem to want to repair their own cars. They seem to deliberately price themselves out of messy jobs like timing belts, and they will actually refuse to repair an auto gearbox. They will only replace them at €3k a pop! :(

Elm Motors - useless and top dollar too. Try Franklin Motors in Ballysimon - 061 339911 - ask for Robert.
